Proposed changes to Australia's anti-money laundering laws could significantly impact how real estate agencies operate. The Australian government has identified the real estate sector as vulnerable to money laundering activities. To combat this, they are proposing to include real estate services under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Act. Here's a summary of the potential changes: - AUSTRAC Registration: Real estate agencies may be required to register with AUSTRAC, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre. - Client Identification: Agencies will likely need to implement robust procedures to verify the identities of their clients. - Suspicious Transaction Reporting: Agencies will be obligated to report any suspicious transactions to AUSTRAC. - Record-Keeping: Comprehensive record-keeping will be mandatory to demonstrate compliance with due diligence requirements. What this means for your agency? These changes will likely impose additional compliance burdens and costs on real estate agencies. As well as significant fines for non compliance.
