Happy World Pilots Day! Today simulators can be an important part of flight training for pilots. Commercial pilots frequently step into the simulator, also referred to as 'sim' or 'the box'. GA (General Aviation) flight schools are increasingly incorporating simulators of single-engine aircraft types into their training routines. Some private pilots also have their own simulator set-up at home. In Commercial Aviation, simulator training has become a cornerstone in the education of commercial pilots, with recurrent sessions occurring at least once every 12 months. Some airlines opt for even more frequent intervals to ensure pilot proficiency. The topics covered during these sessions are carefully curated by airlines' safety and training departments, drawing insights from comprehensive safety data analysis. Emergency procedures can be a part of those sessions. Simulator training serves as a vital tool for fulfilling required operational experience when meeting landing currency requirements becomes challenging through actual flights alone. While the initial investment in purchasing or accessing simulators may seem enormous, the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs, especially considering the significant savings in jet fuel expenses. Aviation regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) and the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), mandate specific timelines for recurrent training intervals, ensuring that pilots remain sharp and up-to-date with the latest safety protocols and procedures.
