The final pillar in our series is ‘leading the way in impact from industry engagement’. Industry engagement, whether in the form of our curricula, our research, our civic activity, or our knowledge exchange work, has always been high on the agenda at the University of Derby. Situated in the heart of England and considered as the home of the Industrial Revolution, Derby is a place where innovators and industrialists have made their mark on the world for over 300 years. As the only university in Derbyshire, we play a critical role as an anchor institution that works side-by-side with thriving global businesses, successful SMEs and other cultural and voluntary organisations to drive innovation and solution-focused responses to challenges. Some of the ways in which we can demonstrate our success include: 💡 Nuclear Skills Academy – the NSA is the first of its kind and aims to sustain nuclear capability within the UK’s submarines programme by creating a dedicated pipeline of talent at the start of their careers. Our partnership with Rolls-Royce is supported by industry and education experts including the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the National College for Nuclear and Derby City Council, ensuring new apprentices have access to the best courses and mentors throughout their apprenticeship. 🐾 Knowledge Transfer Partnership roles with local organisations such as Derbyshire Wildlife Trust – we partner with local organisations to work on specific projects to make a step change in high priority areas. Supported by an academic expert, our KTP Associates use their knowledge, skills and technology to support businesses to deliver these projects. 🐠 Coral Reef Research – led by Dr Michael Sweet, our Environmental Sustainability Research Centre team developed an innovative technique for inducing the spawning of corals in captivity for the very first time, paving the way for large-scale international conservation efforts to restore endangered coral reefs. Through a long-term collaboration with the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London, researchers have created aquarium systems replicating the natural conditions of the Great Barrier Reef and the coral reefs of Singapore. As mentioned in previous posts, I am not just the only scientist of Galician descent in this edition, but the first one in a HB expedition, and my origins and Galician people have been represented even on my application back in October 2022. Since Team HB8 was created in March 2023, I have put so much effort, time, energy, creativity, passion and determination on my journey and my purpose, even outside of my comfort zone (i.e., making myself visible), that I must recognise, feel tired and challenged in both positive and negative ways. I have done this alongside my job and volunteer commitments (and life), and met wonderful people that have inspired/taught me in different ways. No matter how busy, sick and tired, I will always have willpower to liaise with various people to produce positive outcomes in the face of global grand challenges, from inequities to the climate crisis (if you know me, you will probably know about my stubbornness). Yes, an actual war against emus, and spoiler alert: the emus won. 📜 Setting the Scene In the dusty farmlands of Western Australia during the Great Depression, farmers were grappling with plummeting wheat prices. But their biggest challenge? A massive flock of emus turning their fields into a buffet. 💡 The Big Decision Desperate farmers turned to the government for help. The response? Send in the military. Armed with machine guns, Major G.P.W. Meredith and his men were ready to take on the emus. 🎬 Battle Begins Despite their firepower, the soldiers quickly learned that emus are not just any birds. They outsmarted and outran the troops, proving to be more tactical than anyone expected. After multiple failed attempts and thousands of rounds of ammunition, the military retreated, having barely made a dent in the emu population. 🔍 Lessons for Today's Career Scene Underestimating Your Opponent: Just like the soldiers underestimated the emus, in our careers, we often face challenges that seem straightforward but require strategic thinking. Always assess the situation thoroughly before jumping in. Adaptability and Innovation: The emus' ability to adapt and outmaneuver the soldiers teaches us the importance of being flexible and innovative. In a rapidly changing work environment, those who adapt and think outside the box thrive. Simple Solutions Can Be Best: The ultimate resolution came when farmers improved their fences. Sometimes, simple, well-thought-out solutions are more effective than brute force or complex strategies. Persistence and Resilience: Despite initial failures, persistence is key. Whether it's career advancement or project management, resilience often leads to eventual success. This tale of tactical birds and human missteps is a humorous yet poignant reminder that every challenge, no matter how bizarre, holds valuable lessons.
