A recent Airfare Study has analyzed almost one billion flight prices across 8,000 different markets on domestic flights in the United States. 1. Want to save money on flights? Travel mid-week! Wednesday is the cheapest day to fly, saving you on average just over $100 per fare compared to flying on the day it found to be most expensive, which is Sunday. 2. The data for 2024, and for most previous years, shows that the sweet spot to get the cheapest fares is booking between 21 and 74 days before your trip. While it’s possible to get last-minute deals on flights, in general, it’s a bad idea to wait it out. On average, this study found that you are likely to pay up to 59% more for your flight if you book it within six days of departure! 3. Did you know that according to this study, the average airfare in the United States will change price about 49 times between going on sale and the plane actually leaving the runway? REMEMBER THE SEVEN’P’s’! Air fares this summer to many areas in Europe were quite shocking. If people left late to book fares in some cases were over £600 pp during the school holidays. Airlines work on dynamic pricing, as seats fill prices go up. I have a family of five travelling to Florida in August 2025 and Sunday I was up at 00:01 to get the seats as soon as they became available and at launch the five seats were already at over £1k pp return. By 07:00 there were just 38 seats on the flight left and seats were selling at £1.4k pp…..I don’t like it but have to live with it. If you have to travel during school holidays, remember the seven P’s Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents P##s Poor Performance. Plan ahead, get the best prices possible. Late deals are rare but during the year some areas have ‘sweet spots’ where flight rates and room rates are at their best. Such as my New York offer in November. For the Caribbean and Indian Ocean the first two weeks in December and first two in January and early April see prices up to 40% lower than other periods and it’s still high season weather wise. Just in from the Wall Street Journal – FLIGHT PRICES TO PARIS ARE DOWN TODAY. Think a flight to Paris is out of the question this summer given the Summer Olympics hoopla? Take a spin through Google Flights. The deals might surprise you. On Thursday, flights from New York to Paris were as low as $400 round trip for a nonstop in June. That’s next month! You normally see “Prices are currently high’’ for such a search. Instead, Google returned this message: “Prices are currently low–$589 cheaper than usual.’’ The cheapest price was for a red-eye on Norse Atlantic, one of the discounters vying for your business across the Atlantic. But Air France, JetBlue and American each had nonstop flights for $900 in June. That’s still pretty stellar this close to departure dates. Deals are also available on scattered dates in July and in August. The Olympics run from July 26 through Aug. 11. Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein wasn’t kidding when he told Wall Street last month that the Olympics are no bonanza for airlines. Other travelers tend to avoid the destination before, during and after the event. Bottom line: Even if Paris isn’t your final destination, it’s worth shopping for flights there as a jumping off point to other European spots this summer. Pro tips: If your travel dates are flexible, you can shop for the lowest fares by date on Google Flights. Enter your cities. In the date box, just click departures and a calendar will pop up with prices for each date, with the lowest prices highlighted. You can also set up alerts for the route on Google Flights, Kayak and other travel sites and pounce when you see a fare, route and airline you like. GO!

The big Summer airport meltdown started early this year at Manchester yesterday when somebody tripped over a power cable. Cue delays, cancellations & lost luggage. So what do you do when this happens? Even a small level of disruption can have knock on effects but when you can’t use two of your terminals, this is a big problem. Fortunately, airlines are wise to this and do have recovery plans. These include delaying flights overnight (eg TUI), transferring to another departure (eg EasyJet, Emirates) or cancelling outbounds to make sure inbound passengers get home (Jet2). And how it impacts you as a passenger caught up in all this depends on what type of booking you have. If you have a package booking - that is any ATOL protected flight and hotel booking made together- then you will be prioritised for rebooking or given a full refund. If you are flight only, you have the right to be rebooked on the next available flight to your destination or to get a refund. Of course for significant disruption, you may not be able to fly for several days and if you have made independent land arrangements (hotel, villa, car rental, transfer) at your destination, you could lose out as a no show. Airlines won’t compensate you for these arrangements. Thankfully, these situations are rare. But booking at ATOL protected package will give you greater security. Yesterday, Jet2 rebooked their package holiday customers on to today’s flights (and provided transport if it was from a different airport). Flight only bookings were cancelled.
