A Comprehensive Analysis by Vietravel Corp’s Chairman At the seminar “Can We Cool Down Airfare Prices?” hosted by Thanh Nien newspaper on May 17th, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Ky, Chairman of Vietravel Corp – a company operating in both aviation and tourism, offered an in-depth analysis of the reasons behind soaring airfare prices and addressed public concerns, including why traveling to Thailand is cheaper than domestic flights. Airlines Rely on Ancillary Services for Profit, While Flying Itself Incurs Losses To uncover the root cause of high airfare prices, Mr. Ky emphasized that Vietnamese airlines are currently engaged in contract flying, lacking ownership of core technologies. “Even if we purchase aircraft and base them in Vietnam, we are at the mercy of the manufacturer when it comes to engine issues. We can’t just fly whenever we want. We have customers, markets, service crews, and airports, but we don’t have control over the means of flying. Even the software for selling air tickets is foreign-made. In any industry, if you don’t own the core technology, it’s normal to be at the mercy of others. A slight increase in fuel prices can make us anxious. Airlines have to rely on ancillary services for profits because flying itself is currently unprofitable,” the Chairman candidly shared. Citing the Global Trend report by FCM Consulting, Mr. Ky revealed that economy-class airfares worldwide in 2023 increased by 17-25% compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels, with Asia seeing a 21% jump. The global trend for 2024 indicates a further rise of 3-7%. “So it’s not just Vietnam experiencing this hike; it’s a global phenomenon. Airfares from here to the US have never been higher. Business-class tickets that once sold for $3,000-$4,000 now cost $9,000-$11,000, double the previous price. For economy class, tickets that used to be around $750-$900 are now $1,700-$2,100, depending on the timing,” he illustrated. According to Mr. Ky’s calculations, the Vietnamese market is short of about 45-50 aircraft, considering the three major airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, and Bamboo Airways. The entire market has approximately 270 aircraft. Despite a decrease in market load, post-pandemic demand has surged as people seek “healing trips.” Everyone also desires faster, less tactile, and safer travel, boosting air travel demand. New Move to ‘Cool Down’ Peak-Season Airfares Round-trip Domestic Fare Surging According to a survey on April 22nd, airfares are escalating on domestic routes during the peak holiday period from April 27th to May 1st. The round-trip ticket price for the Hanoi – Phu Quoc route on April 27th and returning on May 1st with Vietjet Air is nearly 8 million VND, while Vietnam Airlines is over 9 million VND. The Hanoi – Nha Trang route on the same schedule has a fare of over 3 million VND for the outbound flight and 3.7 million VND for the return flight. Among them, on April 27th, the cheapest fares are 2.2 million VND/ticket, 3.7 million VND, and 3.6 million VND for Vietjet Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Bamboo Airways, respectively. For the Nha Trang – Hanoi route on May 1st, the ticket prices of Vietjet and Bamboo Airways range from 2.8 to 3.7 million VND. In addition, round-trip tickets to Con Dao and Quy Nhon from Hanoi during the holiday fluctuate between 7 and 9 million VND. Minh Anh, a 25-year-old resident of Hoang Mai district, shared: “During this holiday season, round-trip airfares to Da Lat are currently at 6.5 million VND. For my father, mother, and younger brother, the transportation cost alone would be over 25 million VND, excluding food and beverage expenses. Therefore, our family has opted for a 5-day, 4-night tour to Thailand, including the famous Pattaya beach, for just over 7 million VND per person, including airfare and accommodation in 4-5 star hotels. Fiji Airways Airways has announced a new nonstop 13-hour service that will operate thrice weekly, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The service will utilize Fiji Airways’ state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 XWB aircraft. The aircraft will feature 301 economy class seats, which recently won Best Economy Class in Australia and Pacific at the SKYTRAX World Airline Awards 2024, and 33 business class lie-flat, all-aisle access seats. Pending governmental approval, the inaugural flight will depart on 10 December 2024. To celebrate the occasion, the airline announced special fares. Virgin Atlantic and China Eastern Strengthen Connections with New Codeshare Agreement: Virgin Atlantic and China Eastern have inked a pivotal codeshare agreement aimed at bolstering both business and leisure travel ties to East Asia. The deal promises enhanced access to a wider array of destinations across China and beyond. Under the initial phase of the agreement, travelers booking through Virgin Atlantic can seamlessly connect from Heathrow to Shanghai flights to various cities in China, including Chengdu, Changsha, Qingdao, Shenzhen, and Xi’an. Tickets for these routes are now available for purchase. In reciprocation, China Eastern customers will soon gain the ability to connect via Heathrow to select Caribbean and African destinations pending government approval. These destinations include Jamaica, Nassau, Lagos, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. The collaboration comes as both airlines are members of the SkyTeam alliance, with Virgin Atlantic having joined last year. This alliance facilitates smoother travel experiences, particularly for frequent flyers, with services like priority check-in, boarding, and extra baggage allowances available to members of both Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and China Eastern Miles. Additionally, the expanded codeshare presents a boon for Flying Club members, who stand to accrue Virgin Points and Tier Points on all codeshare flights with China Eastern, thereby accelerating their journey towards rewards. The ability to redeem Virgin Points for flights is expected to be introduced shortly. The announcement follows Virgin Atlantic’s resumption of services to Shanghai in May 2023, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening ties with China, a crucial trading partner for the UK.
