Random Run Chat: Life; Mohican 100; Athletic Brewing Company brew I'm registered for Mohican 100, which is on June 1st. I feel excited about the race, but also the preparation. Physically and mentally, I'm in a good spot to take on another 100 miler. Burning River 100 was last summer. These two races are about a year apart. I've done a 50 miler and 50k since then. There are several reasons behind wanting to do this race this year. One of my reasons is to continue to work hard and consistently towards my long-term goal of finishing Badwater 135. I'm getting in those consecutive 100 mile distances and focusing on dialing in the smaller details. When it comes my time to apply, I'll be 110% ready. During my journey to finishing Mohican, I plan on doing a 50 miler. Probably in March because Stephen has an ultramarathon in April. May is too close to June, I want to have a proper taper. I was considering Glacier Ridge Trail 50 Miler in May, but yeah, it's only 3 weeks from Mohican. I might volunteer at GRT again. For starters, the owners of the racehorses part with $24,000 to enter the qualifying stage of the competition, In total, owners can spend up to $175,000 in the qualifying races, including the logistical costs for moving to and from these events. The Kentucky Derby is up next after qualifying, Remember, only 20 spots are up for grabs! For the horses that qualify to compete in the Run for the Roses, the owners part with an additional $50,000 to enter the event. Between the transportation and entry fees for Derby qualifying races, the nomination fees for the Derby, and the jockey fees, We are talking about upwards of $800,000 in expenses to get to Churchill Downs for that iconic race. The significant financial investment and uncertainty in owning a Kentucky Derby horse highlight the high stakes and risks involved in this horseracing event. The planning that goes into making the Kentucky Derby a success is a testament to this extravagance. The winner’s circle is one of the oldest traditions associated with the Derby, The gardeners have to ensure that the winner’s circle is extra beautiful, To put this into context, the gardening team grows and maintains about 20,000 annuals for this event alone. The culinary aspect of the Derby is also a massive operation in itself, Each day has about 40 different menus,  To achieve this, the kitchen has about 100 executive chefs and 1,500 supporting staff. The chefs have to feed an audience the equivalent of seven Super Bowl stadiums, And all this in less than a week. The culinary team prepares 10,000 pounds of smoked brisket, 1,000 pounds of cheese, and thousands of chicken breasts! At least 1,100 semi-trucks are required to handle the logistics of moving the inventory days before Derby Day. For the drinks, the mint julep is the classic signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, The drink alone brings in an average of $2.5 million in sales. To satisfy demand, the inventory for drinks includes about 1,000 pounds of mint, 10,000 bourbon bottles, and thousands of Coca-Cola cans. This is in addition to the pallets of water used across the track hourly. Everything culminates in the Run for the Roses, where the winner gets draped in a blanket of roses, And the owner(s) of the winning horse cash a sizeable prize cheque.
