Works have commenced on site for a full refurbishment as well as ground, first and second floor extensions to a mid-terrace home in Stoke Newington. A host of issues discovered during the design and exploration stages meant that works have ended being more structurally rigorous than initially planned and a lot of the design decisions have been dictated by the site conditions. In this project more than most form follows function and a structural reason is present behind every design move or material. As per the client brief, we had to curate and design an office building built on two adjacent plots. Therefore, instead of going for two separate structures, we resorted to using the facets of Fluid Architecture and create a unanimous facade that is flexibly connected yet separate. School construction is one of Stalco's core markets. The renovation of the vast, 500,000sf Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, which contains the oldest surviving school building in America, encompassed replacement of 50 different roofs and 2,000 linear feet of coping stones on six elevations, re-pointing of 40% of the brick façades, selected brick repairs, replacement of 240 windows and 30 exterior doors, waterproofing of cellar vaults extending below Flatbush Avenue, and interior renovations and water damage repairs to selected areas, including the historic auditorium that originally served as a chapel.
