🌍 Extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, and 🔥wildfires are reshaping national adaptation policies across Europe. The latest briefing of the European Environment Agency ‘Is Europe on track towards climate resilience? Status of reported national adaptation actions in 2023,’ shows that #ClimateRisk assessments are crucial in guiding and enhancing #adaptation strategies. 📊Did you know that between 1980 and 2022, weather- and climate-related extremes caused EUR 650 billion in economic losses, with EUR 59.4 billion in 2021 and EUR 52.3 billion in 2022 alone. As these events are expected to intensify further, Europe's journey towards #ClimateResilience becomes more crucial than ever. 🌦💧🔥 Read the briefing for insights on Europe's adaptation progress ➡ https://lnkd.in/d2Hhvd9P #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateResilience

On 8th and 9th of February I had the chance to attend “The Climate Chance Europe 2024 Wallonia Summit”, Adaption to Climate Change, Nature-based Solutions and Resilience. Organized by the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, various actors and institutions from all over the European continent gathered in Liège for the first time on this scale, discussing topics of adaptation to climate change. Often mentioned as the awakening call during the sessions, the serious floods of 2021 in Belgium and Germany were an omnipresent reminder of what costs climate change brings. Yes, climate change is already here, and it hits hard. Despite the recent catastrophe and future challenges, it was amazing to see the activism and motivation, the many positive examples and the knowledge accumulated, from young citizen to communities, from companies to institutions. The Liège declaration is a necessary step and adds to the European Green Deal considering climate protection as key element. Nevertheless it's time to take matters into our own hands and establish climate adaptation as standard as well. A brief resume from the event could sound like this: consider available resources, prioritize and make use of synergies, be inclusive and work together, check for good examples on all levels and adapt them to your demands, benefit from natural based solutions and highlight their advantages. And, just get it started!
