Discounts will be offered to select households, encouraging reduced electricity usage during peak hours on Wednesdays to alleviate demand in the cold weather. Suppliers participating in the National Grid ESO scheme will provide refunds to smart meter users who decrease consumption between 17:00 and 18:30 GMT. National Grid assures that this initiative is precautionary and does not indicate a risk to electricity supplies. The Demand Flexibility Service allows households to save money by avoiding high-power activities during periods of high demand. The scheme, extended to businesses, witnessed 1.6 million participants last year, saving enough energy to power nearly 10 million homes. Octopus Energy, endorsing the initiative, plans to reward customers with points or account credits, aiming to support charitable donations. With the UK heavily reliant on gas for electricity, last winter's disruption in gas supplies from Russia due to the Ukraine conflict led to increased demand and soaring household bills. Developer-owned #DistrictEnergy facilities—which are cropping up as a low-cost way to add low-carbon energy sources into new developments—may put their small pool of customers at risk of rate spikes. Though they can have higher initial start-up costs, district energy facilities pay off in the long run if customers are gain long-term access to low-cost heat and cooling. But due to the smaller scale of the facilities, unanticipated extra costs can mean the difference between a “rate shock and a comfortable, yet of course regrettable, increase” for their relatively small pools of customers, said Leigha Worth, executive director of the non-profit B.C.
