As a FILM PRODUCER, hiring the best crew is a blend of art and science. It’s not just about finding the most talented individuals, but about assembling a team that can work seamlessly together, understand the creative vision, and navigate the inevitable challenges that come with production. Here’s what I’ve learned: 1. Experience Matters: Look for crew members with a proven track record, but don’t discount emerging talent. Fresh perspectives can bring new energy to a project. 2. Cultural Fit: Your crew should align with the project’s vision and the working culture. A shared sense of purpose drives better collaboration and creativity. 3. Passion Over Paycheck: Those who are truly passionate about their craft will go the extra mile. They’re the ones who will stay late, push through challenges, and contribute beyond their job description. 4. Communication Skills: A great crew doesn’t just follow instructions—they bring ideas to the table. Effective communication is key to ensuring everyone is on the same page and working toward the same goal. 5. Network Smartly: Build relationships within the industry. Often, the best crew members come through referrals from trusted colleagues. 6. Trust Your Instincts: Sometimes, it’s about gut feeling. If someone feels like the right fit, they probably are. My biggest takeaway from working in the film & TV industry at Sky Studios: Speak up. I think in any entry-level role, it's easy to think you're "too junior" to be asking for what you want or contributing in conversations with higher-ups. When in reality, people remember what you say and will keep you in mind when an opportunity does come up. 🎬 If I was "too junior" to be asking to gain experience working on a TV set... → I wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to develop my production management skills in a fast-paced production office 🌠 If I was "too junior" to share my special interest in diversity, equity and inclusion... → I wouldn't have had the chance to attend DE&I events and take the lead on impactful projects I'm passionate about 💬 If I was "too junior" to ask senior people for coffee catch-ups to learn more about their career journeys... → I wouldn't have built the network I'm now always leaning on for advice and support (which I hope I'm returning the favour on!) Every opportunity is what you make of it - and you're doing yourself a disservice by underestimating the value you bring to a team. (No matter how junior you are!) Most of you know me as a filmmaker, but for the past three years, I've had the pleasure of working at Picture Head, the world's largest trailer finishing company. I was brought on board to launch their first-ever Premiere finishing division. Building a global team from scratch has been an absolute blast. We crafted a new workflow and landed Amazon as a major client. If you've seen trailers for Lord of the Rings, Arcane, or Air on your TV or smartphone, that's likely our handiwork. The folks at Picture Head are truly top-notch at what they do. I've honed some new skills you wouldn't typically associate with a documentary director, like integrating a global workforce, designing a communication system for 300 employees, streamlining financial workflows, and developing a post-production pipeline that churns out hundreds of files daily. With the pipeline now running, the job is complete. It's an interesting time out there, so I'm open to many things. I'm searching for documentary work, but I also have a lot of knowledge in post-production, corporate optimization, and even launching a business. URGENT: Challenge Producer needed… (based anywhere) Shout out on behalf of a US based production partner of ours who needs an experienced challenge producer for 2-3 weeks in August (ie starting imminently). You’ll be coming up with ambitious challenges of scale for a primetime TV series probing business and leadership skills. Experience on these kinds of shows is an advantage but they don’t want cut-and-paste Apprentice ideas, so if you don’t have business show credits that’s also ok so long as you have a diverse set of *challenge producer* credits. You can work from home/anywhere, but the production is LA based so there will be some time shifting/evening calls required. As this is not my production I won’t be personally replying so please don’t be upset if you don’t hear back. Great opportunity here for someone

Anyone else getting frustrated by "doom scrolling" for jobs? Anyone else in a place where you don't even know what you're looking for anymore? I've had so many different jobs in an entertainment and entertainment adjacent capacity, and have built a very broad set of skills over the years. In talking to a job coach, their one critique was "what is your mission statement for yourself?" I. DON'T. KNOW. My passions and skills can take me so many different directions at this point that I don't want to close off any opportunities by limiting my search. In my previous job, I was in the very unique position of being a part of a brand new department in film/TV production. People's previous work experience and skills were looked at rather than just previous job titles. I feel like so many of the jobs I've been applying for automatically throw me out because I don't have "Project Manager," "Production Coordinator," "Associate Producer" titles, though I have essentially done those roles and possess the skills and experience to thrive in any of those roles, but I can't get a foot in the door. I wish the companies that I was applying to could look beyond titles, and just chat with me for a few minutes to see how accomplished, driven, and talented I am. I'm sure a lot of you all feel the same way too. And please stop telling us we're overqualified. We've seen the salary. We've seen the job descriptions. If we're applying, we're capable and willing. If we're "overqualified," you're essentially getting us at a bargain. Just give us a chance to use our skills and experiences to your benefit, and help us start making a paycheck again. #unemploymentsolidatity
