Spotlight on Competency-Based Education at Lakeshore Technical College! As the adoption of competency-based education (CBE) continues to grow, Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) is becoming a beacon for other institutions looking to implement or expand this innovative education delivery model. Recently, C-BEN Member, LTC welcomed visitors from Umpqua Community College and Northeast Iowa Community College, eager to observe and learn from LTC’s successful practices. Dr. Meredith Sauer, Vice President of Instruction at LTC, highlighted the advantages of CBE: “We realized our traditional schedules were barriers to potential students with work and family commitments. Competency-based education provides the flexibility for college to fit around their lives.” Since adopting CBE, LTC has seen remarkable enrollment increases: Medical coder program: ⬆️ 100% Welding program: ⬆️ 60% Auto collision program: ⬆️ 77% CBE focuses on what students can do, allowing them to learn at their own pace with personalized coaching and support. What to do during the twilight period between GCSEs finishing and the end of term? Clearly the Y11s need a break after the attritional exam season and many have little motivation to return to the school routine, which we all understand. It’s always an interesting conundrum, though, particularly in fee-paying schools where parents are often keen to lock in value for money, and even more so at an online school such as MVA, where we have no physical contact with our students. As Head of Y11, I’m passionate about teaching our young people as wide a range of life skills as possible, something I am not convinced the curriculum facilitates. Yes, PSHE Leads - including ours! - are typically brilliant at producing innovative and engaging schemes of work that target life skills such as financial, careers and wellbeing literacy. What about practical ‘how to adult’ skills though? That’s why I’ve decided to offer our Y11s a virtual ‘how to adult’ course (to sit alongside study skills and subject-specific academic transition resources) with modules such as: How to sew a button How to master the laundry How to change a bed How to iron a shirt How to master basic cooking skills … With a certificate at the end, of course, because everyone loves to get a reward for effort! It’s been huge fun brainstorming module ideas with colleagues (full disclosure: many of us admitted not to be able to do all of the above!) and creating the course. All of this has got me thinking: what practical skills would others in my network like to have learnt at school? What do you do to occupy Y11s after GCSEs?

In Early Childhood Education, the concept of process versus product refers to two distinct aspects of learning and development.

💡 Don’t Forget 💡 If your child is in the academic year before their Phase Transfer year (I.e. if they’re moving into Reception, Year 7 or Year 12 in September 2025), and they have an EHCP - their annual review should be held this term, or latest the beginning of the Winter term, in order to meet Phase Transfer Deadline.
