Bad actors have always tried to exploit new technologies. This election season, we need to be more vigilant than ever. A manipulated video claiming that President Biden’s voice at VP Harris’ press conference was AI-generated, went viral on X yesterday. The user created an impression that they run a clip through our AI speech classifier to spread misinformation that the call was created on our platform. The results, further confirmed by the analysis from Hany Farid, clearly show that the audio wasn’t generated from our service. In February, we introduced no-go voices to block the creation of voice clones of political candidates and we are continuously improving safeguards to prevent the misuse of our tools. We develop AI audio tools to help overcome language and communication barriers, paving the way for a more connected, creative, and productive world and we're committed to preventing bad actors from exploiting them.

The extent to which the federal government will regulate artificial intelligence is a hot topic in Washington, DC. This morning, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing titled “The Need to Protect Americans’ Privacy and the AI Accelerant.” Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) led the discussion, exploring the need for a comprehensive federal privacy law to protect individuals and set guidelines for businesses that use and develop AI systems. The influence of legislators on citizens’ privacy with AI is paramount to the conversation on access to quality information. Senators Maria Cantwell, Marsha Blackburn, and Martin Heinrich have recently introduced the COPIED ACT, a bill that seeks to develop transparency standards for “content provenance information, watermarking, and synthetic content detection” in relation to AI content. Geared toward combating deepfakes and AI-driven theft, the bill would create a set of standards to clearly identify the origin of AI-generated information. Three highlights (full text in the link): 1 - "European Union officials reached a landmark deal Friday on the world’s most ambitious law to regulate artificial intelligence, paving the way for what could become a global standard to classify risk, enforce transparency and financially penalize tech companies for noncompliance." [...] 2 - "The legislation ultimately included restrictions for foundation models but gave broad exemptions to “open-source models,” which are developed using code that’s freely available for developers to alter for their own products and tools. The move could benefit open-source AI companies in Europe that lobbied against the law, including France’s Mistral and Germany’s Aleph Alpha, as well as Meta, which released the open-source model LLaMA." The EU may be leading here with AI as it did with data protection rights in social media. The combination of a powerful and self-interested BigTech lobby resisting all but self-regulation together with a federal political structure and Congress dysfunction mean that the US finds it difficult to make progress in this area. It will not be the last word, but the EU is pioneering a path that others may follow - in AI as with data protection and the regulation of social media. #AI #BigTech #EU

This morning, the European Parliament's LIBE and IMCO committees have overwhelmingly endorsed the groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence Act, with a vote of 71-8 (and 7 abstentions). 🎉 🔜 Next steps: The text awaits a formal adoption in an upcoming Parliament plenary session and final Council endorsement.
