Strengthening Education-Industry Partnerships for Enhanced Job Readiness and Skill Development, by Sorina Faier, Partner Editor Nine O’Clock Many #employers have been facing an increasingly pressing issue: the shortage of suitable employees. Regardless of the industry or field, finding and retaining qualified and motivated employees has become more and more challenging. #education and #employers working together plays a crucial role in preparing young people for the labour market, as the skills and qualifications people acquire through education directly impact their ability to find employment and to contribute effectively to the economy. This collaboration needs improvement to identify the skill needs of the labor market and to train young people accordingly in areas where there is demand, ensuring they are well-prepared for emerging #technologies and innovations in the market and can secure well-paid jobs after graduation. Career Assistance Programs Research I conducted in 2013-2014 into career assistance programs delivered to Australian athletes identified five program elements linked to successful transitions after sport. These elements were: - personal management skills - occupational and vocational elements - career development elements - social support development and - counselling elements. Reflecting on my time in the AFL, these five program element types remain important in managing successful transitions. The increased demand on time for both athletes and Player Development Managers is impacting the availability for athletes to access internal personal skills, career development and occupational / vocational programs. This is where Career Game Plan can help. We offer 1:1 and group initiatives to define where current, transitioning, and past athletes are in their career journey and guide them to envision and prepare for their future to ensure a lifelong legacy of achievement and wellbeing. Over the coming weeks we will dive deeper into the 5 program element types – explaining what they are, where they can be accessed and how they may help.

In today's job market, many employers miss out on exceptional candidates because of a single line on a job listing: the education section. While job duties and ideal candidate qualifications span multiple lines, the requirement for a specific degree often sidelines highly experienced and passionate individuals. This practice is akin to friend-zoning a suitor who embodies all the qualities of character and you desire, simply because they seem "too nice." Employers, in their pursuit of a formal piece of paper, often overlook those who have demonstrated their abilities through real-world experience and dedication. This phenomenon raises an important question: what do employers value most? Is it someone who has proven their capability to excel in the job through hands-on experience but lacks a formal education, or someone who may be slightly less qualified, but can pass a test and earn a degree? The professional world is increasingly recognizing that practical skills and a strong work ethic can often outweigh formal education. Regrettably, life got in the way of me finishing my degree. I will eventually be in a place to finish it, but it is a fact that haunts me every day and one that I am constantly reminded of as I navigate this professional landscape. However, that should in no way diminish my decades of experience and accomplishment. Or negate my drive for learning and excellence. Nor should it yours or anyone else's. I look forward to the day when hiring practices reflect this understanding and give a more holistic and equal consideration to candidates whose experience and passion make them ideal for the role, even if they lack a traditional degree that they may not have been afforded the opportunity to obtain.
