You have AAU, team camps, open gyms, league games etc. There are all kinds of chances to participate and they are fine if you are working with teammates or want to be seen. What you have many times is players with same moves, same shot selection etc. without really improving their game. Just basically staying the same. But there is a distinction between loving the game, the competition itself, and what it means to actually love the game and all the things necessary that lead up to that competition. The skill work, ball handling, extra shots, late nights, long hours of individual work. You hear players all the time saying “ I want to play”, but going through the process of becoming a complete player, the sacrifice, work, and discipline that goes with that, is what separates you. That attitude of being the best you can be is the real love of the game.

Last Saturday, I participated in my first calisthenics competition. To sign up, athletes needed to be able to do five bodyweight pull-ups and ten dips. I was very hesitant because I couldn't do ten dips. However, along with two other women from the community, we decided to sign up together, treating it as a learning experience. 🤸♂️ When my turn arrived, I completely zoned out and pushed myself beyond my limits, discovering my new max rep. This achievement was the result of two years of consistent training, patience, and perseverance through many ups and downs. 👉 Why am I sharing this story? Because it resonates with my new career in software development. I often focus on what I can't do rather than acknowledging how far I've come and the progress I've made. This workshop is for members of VSP+, our online community network of Sport Psychology Professionals. In equestrian sports, there are two beings that must become one in order to achieve successful performance: horse and rider. Although horses and humans process information and perceive the world differently, it is up to the rider to understand cognitive properties in each brain in order to effectively merge both mindsets and optimally ride. In non-equestrian sports, athletes have a responsibility over their own mindset but also must align with their coaches and potential teammates in order to achieve an optimal performance. How do we blend these separate minds into one?
