Get ready to dust off your dictionaries, because it's Spelling Bee season! Our Ashley Central New Jersey showrooms are thrilled to be the sponsor of the 2024 Regional Spelling Bee for schools in Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex Counties with Press Communications, llc. This marks our 5th consecutive year of supporting this exciting educational event! The Scripps National Spelling Bee is not just any competition; it's the nation's largest and oldest educational program, with a history dating back to 1925. Its mission is to help students enhance their spelling skills, expand their vocabularies, grasp complex concepts, and master proper English usage. Last year, more than 7 million viewers tuned in to watch the national finals 👀. As we venture into this year's spelling bee season, let's remember the value of learning, the thrill of competition, and the importance of community. Together, we can inspire the next generation of scholars and leaders. #Ashley #spellingbee #spelling #communinty

Structured Literacy for the win…again! We love celebrating when struggling students become confident, independent readers. Meet Mia, a struggling reader who fell behind during the pandemic. By 3rd grade, her reading scores were in the single digits. After 15 months of WRS instruction, Mia has rejoined the regular ELA class, reading at grade level and keeping up with her peers! Three cheers for Mia and her amazing reading specialist! R.E.A.L. Discussion's Liza Garonzick describes class discussion as ... "a way for students to experience and practice interdependence — that is, the skill of seeing, appreciating, and depending on each other in a world that’s obsessed with individual success and personal preferences ... class discussion teaches students that yes, their individual voices matter — but so does listening and showing others they matter. Class discussion helps kids learn to give and take — and ultimately discover the power of exploring ideas together and in real-time." https://lnkd.in/eNm2SkWn Sanje Ratnavale, Lynn Schramek, Alli Minch, OESIS Network, Liza Garonzik

Some brilliant book recommendations here. For me, it’s the #oracy element of sharing a story; talking about the characters, developing empathy, exploring the richness of language that accompanies a wonderful narrative.

It's both an honor and a privilege to ensure that our students see themselves positively represented in our curriculum. By deliberately integrating a diverse array of voices and perspectives into our teaching, we not only enrich the educational experience for all students but also cultivate an environment where cultural validation and understanding flourish. 🔗For more insights, download our 'Inclusivity' Checklist: https://bit.ly/42q2UD8

A diverse classroom offers us a unique opportunity for growth and learning as we are challenged to create inclusive and engaging lessons that meet the needs of all our students. In a diverse classroom, students learn from each other and better understand and accept different viewpoints and ways of life. This can lead to greater empathy, compassion, and an overall sense of inclusivity. 🔗For more insights, download our 'Inclusivity' Checklist: https://bit.ly/42q2UD8

According to Beverly Cleary, “Children should learn that reading is pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school.” Mike Doughty and I couldn't agree more, and that’s why in this episode we talk about the book The Joy of Reading by Donalyn Miller and Teri S. Lesesne. Here’s more of what we know: - Decades of over-testing and standardized learning have crowded out students’ joy in reading. When it comes to reading, students report they are bored and uninterested. Research tells us that this undermines reading achievement. - Fortunately, educators at every level can cultivate reading joy by supporting students’ reading independence and reading community. And it can be done without abandoning evidence-based instruction.
