🐮 Breaking News: H5N1 Detected in US Dairy Cows The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in dairy cows within Texas and Kansas. The bird flu was identified in unpasteurized milk from cows showing symptoms at two farms in Kansas and one in Texas, with further detections in nose and throat swabs at an additional Texas farm. Preliminary findings suggest a possible infection rate of up to 10% in the cattle populations of these farms. The situation is exacerbated by the discovery of deceased wild birds on the premises, hinting at potential vectors for disease transmission. Laboratory analysis of the clinical milk samples revealed significant abnormalities, including a thick, syrupy consistency. Despite the effective neutralization of the virus through pasteurization processes, which ensures the safety of milk for consumption, the USDA has opted to either divert or destroy milk from the impacted dairies as a precaution. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has not identified any mutations in the virus that would suggest increased transmissibility to humans. In response to the outbreak, the Texas Agriculture Commissioner has advised against the depopulation of the affected herds at this time, indicating controlled management of the situation. This incident underscores the critical importance of developing broad spectrum, extremely affordable antivirals.
