I never thought I would be so happy about a low conversion rate. The conversion rate for "The Plug"** opt-in page is low. It has been between 30-38%. But I know that one of the main reasons is this required check box. Confirming that you are someone that I am aligned with fully. Now, while it makes me disappointed that a large percentage of the people that clicked- seem to not give a flying f*ck about basic human rights. (though not surprised). I am happy for... a- the people that do agree and tap in to this world. I love yall. b- that these stages, rooms, communities, media interviews that I am plugging this audience into are reserved for the people that are actually going to use them for good. People that are here to disrupt. Speak up. Speak out. In 2023 I burned down my businesses. I was feeling frustrated with my a large part of my network, unaligned with some of my clients, and disconnected from the work I was doing in the world. Things felt off for months as I slowly began retiring programs, cutting back on 1:1, and going in to hermit mode over the summer. The final straw was in October. When a media company client I had poured so much in to because of their so called dedication to being "disruptors" and "allies" decided to say they did not want to use their platform to speak up about genocide and that it didn't fit with the brand. And then decided to remove the queer contributor from the team when this contributor called them up and out about it. Then a past client turned collaborator turned out to be a zionist and I needed to remove them from a project I was building. I felt pissed. Heart Broken. Betrayed. Embarrassed. DONE. I felt angry with myself for falling for their claims of being disruptors, change-makers, allies and action-takers. I shut the rest of my businesses down and went through a dark night of the soul. I told myself I would never work on getting these people visible again. I was not sure I even wanted to build community or network again. I lost trust in everyone- including myself. Slowly this rage and grief turned into passion to create something that brought together these opportunities, connections, and the industry trust I had spent decades building. But in a way that was accessible to everyone with out a high paywall. I knew that if I was going to work to get people visible, stories shared, voices amplified- that it would be for GOOD. It was time for the TRUE shit talkers, rule breakers, status quo shakers, freedom fighters get a turn on the mics. I wanted to make sure the stories we heard in 2024 and beyond weren't from the same select few regurgitating the same dude-bro, manipulative, harmful, fake narrative, toxic-positivity BS. The Plug was created to clear paths and blaze trails for more WOC and Queer Folk. And to create a space of safety for myself, to feel good sharing and showing the fuck up in my fullness unapologetically. So yes- the conversion is low. But the magic is BIG.

This is not going away, I think people forget that these trolls are also people who work in the industry and resent having to create diverse stories. Luckily they are in the minority, the world wants diverse games. These people are not just kids with a twitch channel waging a campaign, they are mainly adults staging what they think is a digital war on their freedom to be rid of any diversity. They are parents, law makers, professors and teachers too. What’s scarier is that this hateful attitude spills into writing, art and software development classes from K-12 to higher ed. It’s already well documented how impressionable young people are to toxic online culture. It grows with them. Unfortunately throwing more game designers, writers and artists at the problem is not going to solve it alone. For 1, gamers outnumber game creators by the millions, 2 - it takes years to ship the games they are complaining about. You aren’t going to drown them with a swath of diverse games overnight but there is much that can be done. Game publishers, funders, community managers and developers have to be make it abundantly clear that they will not tolerate toxic culture. Steam, Discord, Twitch, Reddit, Facebook groups X(Twitter), Mastedon, Bluesky and other social platforms allow these groups to proliferate and give them a safe home. Game conferences like GDC, PAX, DICE, and Indiecade is where the industry sets the pulse for the gaming world and it’s an opportunity to change the course of gaming. Sadly, the game industry hasn’t done a great job of quelling these gamer gate types in favor revenue which means companies trying to change the narrative of an industry have a long road ahead but we need even more of them. We need deep pockets to create more advocacy and impact around diversity. Support diverse game creators, artists and designers. Hire and promote people who support diversity(to the executive level). Fund scholarships for diversity in gaming education, art, writing, law and STEM. Sponsor diverse e-sports teams and programs like Cxmmunity Media . Give to organizations in gaming who want change like Take This, Inc., Fair Play Alliance, Gay Gaming Professionals International Game Developers Association (IGDA®) GameHeads Women in Games International (WIGI) Black In Gaming Latinx in Gaming The AbleGamers Charity Women in Games Games for Change Black Girl Gamers Game Devs of Color Expo Games for Girls UNICEF game changers coalition, this is not a complete list so please tag more in the comments.
