"Literacy is a human right, not a privilege." The Dyslexia Alliance for Black Children (DABC) recently held Day 1 of its first virtual conference. Tracy L Weeden delivered the closing keynote on Saturday, highlighting the economic impact of dyslexia (and struggling readers). Among other facts and figures, she shared a very real consequence of poor literacy - "If all adults in the United States had a reading level equivalent to that of a 6th grader, the estimated economic benefit would be $2.2 trillion annually" (Gallup, Assessing the Economic Gains of Eradicating Illiteracy Nationally and Regionally, 2020). The conference reminds us that to make real change in America for both adults and children, we need every single person to care about literacy. Literacy is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all.
