Businesses are warning that scammers are impersonating legitimate recruitment companies and advertising fake jobs to steal personal information. Fraudsters are posting vacancies online and sending WhatsApp messages to entice people into sharing their details. 2i Recruit in Surrey reported receiving calls from 25 scam victims who were asked to provide personal information. Action Fraud has noted an increase in recruitment scams, where criminals promise extra work or income to deceive victims into revealing sensitive information. Scammers are exploiting reputable job websites to target victims. Jenny Jamieson, the recruitment director and founder of 2i Recruit in Godalming, shared that scammers posed as representatives from her company in October. Jamieson explained, "Candidates were calling us about a job supposedly advertised by us, but it wasn't in our listings. They were upset, thinking our business was trying to steal their information." She added, "We found out that scammers had posted a job advert under our company name on Indeed.com. The advert was well-written and offered a good salary, making it very appealing. I’m positive that everyone who uses LinkedIn, Monster, Indeed, Zip-Recruiter, etc as a tool for locating employment has experienced a wave of eager recruiters messaging them daily about exciting new career opportunities. Great, right? Well it would be, if they were legitimate recruiters with valid jobs. I’d hate to estimate what the validity ratio is for actual job opportunities, (versus identity theft scams, and bait and switch), but it’s not a passing grade. Not by a long shot. I’m puzzled why LinkedIn (specifically) doesn’t investigate and remove these nefarious organizations. Maybe someone has the answer. I suspect it’s either bureaucratic inefficiency, or indifference. If I had a nickel for every text, email, or call I’ve received from ‘recruiters’ who feel I’m a great fit for the job they have, I’d be a wealthy man. (Spoiler, I’m not wealthy). 😂. The messages themselves are reasonable well written (probably AI) but when you speak to the person, they can barely speak English, and that lack of communication alone SHOULD send us all scrambling to hang up or block them. Sadly, it doesn’t. Most of us wouldn’t dream of revealing our personal or financial information to total strangers who just called us out of the blue in broken English and no caller ID, but before we wise up, they mention astronomical salary amounts. Once they bait the hook, all bets are off. It’s the same logic-sapping human greed which causes some people to become peniliess in Las Vegas. “Maybe it’s real!” (NOPE.) “But they have 5,000 followers on LinkedIn.” (So, they are clever scammers with a large network of accomplices). I want to find a good job, and I don't have time to spend dealing with the scammers, and I now realize the best way for me to deal with the frustration is to share information to others to help them deal with the issue. 🚨 Beware of Job Scams! 🚨 I watched a concerning story on the news this morning about scammers targeting job seekers with fake roles, posing as recruitment agencies or employers. These scammers are active on platforms like Indeed, where they lure individuals with enticing job offers and then ask for personal information upfront, which they misuse to attempt identity theft and fraud. 😱 One poor guy on the news had been scammed out of £8000 by a scammer posing as a Recruitment Agency who asked him for upfront payments for equipment and 'security checks' 😡 Here are some tips to protect yourself from falling victim to such scams: 🕵️♂️ Research the Company: Before diving into any recruitment process, thoroughly investigate the company offering the position. Look for a legitimate website, online reviews, and ratings. Check if they have a physical address and contact information. Also, see if you can find employees of the company on LinkedIn. Legitimate recruiters usually have professional LinkedIn profiles. 💸 Never Pay for a Job: Legitimate employers don't ask candidates to pay upfront fees for job opportunities—this is illegal in the UK. Be cautious if a job offer requests payment for training materials, background checks, or administrative fees. Scammers often use this tactic to swindle money from job seekers without providing real employment opportunities. 🤔 Trust Your Instincts: If something seems off or if you have doubts about the legitimacy of a recruitment agency or employer, trust your gut and proceed with caution. Pay attention to warning signs like aggressive sales tactics, inconsistent information, or unprofessional behaviour. How to spot a message scam Employment scams, like these, typically involve a scammer impersonating a recruiter and luring victims in with promises of work that don't exist. This theatrical scam will often start with the scammer asking for your personal information, either your CV or send you a questionnaire to complete, you may then be asked to pay fees for administration or travel. Genuine recruiters shouldn't contact jobseekers in this way, so as a general rule of thumb it's best to ignore tempting job offers sent via text message. It may not always be obvious to spot a job ad scam, but here are some giveaways that you're dealing with a scammer: It's a message that you weren't expecting. It comes from a number or email address you don't recognise.  It contains a link - it's best to avoid clicking on links in messages in case they contain malware that could be installed on your device. It offers unrealistic salaries or working arrangements - if it's too good to be true then it probably is. You're being asked for money or personal details, such as your CV. The advert is poorly written and contains spelling errors. In the last four months of my job search, I've encountered nearly 20 sophisticated scam emails 😱 These scammers often use REAL NAMES and TITLES and seemingly legitimate email domains, complete with branded signatures. These scammers take it further by listing actual job positions that companies are currently hiring for, precisely aligning with your job search criteria, making their scams seem incredibly convincing. Seriously, who can remember every single position they've applied to? Personally, I've sent out applications for over 2000 roles in just the last few months alone! Here’s how you can protect yourself from getting scammed while searching for jobs: 1. Double-Check the Job Listing before responding to any emails 🔍: Always revisit the original job listing. A discrepancy in job details, like location (hybrid vs. remote), can be a red flag. 2. Verify Identities 🕵️♀️: Look up the person who allegedly sent the email. Scammers may set up fake LinkedIn profiles with real company names. #LinkedIn hasn't yet implemented a verification system for employment claims. Currently, ANYONE can list themselves as part of ANY organization, which opens the door for potential misuse and deception. 3. Question Email Interviews 📧: Be wary if the first interview round involves just answering questions via email. This is often a scam tactic. 4. Reach Out on LinkedIn 💬: Message the supposed sender on LinkedIn for verification. This can confirm the email’s authenticity and possibly lead to a genuine connection. Yesterday, I received an email from a supposed hiring manager claiming to represent a reputable company. However, upon closer inspection, I noticed that the email domain didn't match the company's name. This raised a red flag immediately. Not only that, in the email they requested I pay for and complete a credit check before moving on in the hiring process. The link provided did not look like a credible background check site (like Certn). Immediate block, delete, and report as spam. It's disheartening to see scammers preying on individuals eager to find employment. That's why I urge everyone to exercise caution and look out for these warning signs: 1. Mismatched Email Domains: Always verify that the email domain matches the company's name. Legitimate companies typically use professional email addresses. 2. Requests for Payment Upfront: Be extremely wary of any requests for payment before you've even interviewed, let along started working. This could be a sign of a scam. 3. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off or too good to be true, trust your instincts and investigate further before proceeding. Beware of job offer scams! It's a trap. Scammers are taking advantage of job seekers by impersonating legitimate companies and employees. Be vigilant and stay safe! - Immediately check the real company website for scam notices, how recruiters will contact you, and verify the person contacting you works there via LinkedIn. - NEVER give any personal information out - Do not agree to anything - Ask questions about vague promises - Watch for misspellings, bad punctuation and capitalization, and poor grammar, although they are getting better at this If you interact with these leeches to distract them from harming others, stay safe! - Record, export, or screenshot chat history - Copy names, contact info, and companies they claim to work for - Use urlscan.io to see a screenshot of the websites they are trying to send you to - Use a whois domain lookup. Scammers use throw away domains that were recently created - Go to the actual website of the place they are trying to send you to and look for scam warnings - Report everything to the company they are impersonating
