If 20 percent of workplaces are somewhat to very #toxic and people are steeped in that teapot for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week... what is this doing to people's overall #health let alone their #productivity. If the news report was that 20 percent of children were being #abused every day for 8 hours a day, we'd have people rioting in the streets... but because it's happening to adults, society seems to have left their compassion and fervor at the door. Business need to do better! Leaders need to do better! Governments need to do better! Everyone has a role to play in this!

Aaron Halliday, PhD with another truth bomb 💣 My take on this: It’s time for all organizations to acknowledge that there’s likely some level of toxicity occuring under their watch. Whether those acts are deliberate or not is irrelevant because the consequences can be dire in both cases. We all have a responsibility to take care of one another and that starts with being proactive in unearthing the signs that something is off. It took us far too long to acknowledge the glass ceiling, unfair treatment of women and minorities, or the outright racist and homophobic policies and practices (written and unwritten) that were holding us back. How we shape the workplace and ensure everyone is cared for in that space can be a powerful catalyst for broader societal change. We still have a lot to do. Is tackling toxicity in the workplace the next frontier long overdue to be crossed in order to achieve supreme inclusivity? Side note: If you’re not already following Aaron, you should. He’s a strong advocate for treating employees like actual human beings and always has the science and research to back his views.

Although some survey results show positive developments, the data also reveal the need for improvements. In fact, 55% of workers strongly (21%) or somewhat (34%) agreed that their employer thinks their workplace environment is a lot mentally healthier than it actually is, and 43% reported worrying that if they told their employer about a mental health condition, it would have a negative impact on them in the workplace. Workplace stress also remains at a concerning level, with 77% of workers having reported experiencing work-related stress in the last month. https://lnkd.in/gSi6Vjzv.

Workplace stress significantly impacts employees' mental well-being, with 81% of US workers admitting it affects their mental health. Additionally, in a 2021 survey, 76% of US workers reported at least one mental health symptom. Managing well-being in the workplace isn’t just for a few; it's for the majority. Organizations don’t emerge unscathed either; we lose $193.2 billion in earnings every year due to serious mental illness. Moreover, if workers are unsatisfied with the mental health support in their job, they are more likely to seek new employment. However, there is hope. Workers who feel valued by leadership report higher psychological safety. Companies can cultivate psychologically safe environments through trauma-informed practices, offering a path toward improved mental health outcomes and increased productivity. Recognizing the reciprocal impact of mental health in the workplace and the workplace on employee well-being is the first step toward fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
