I am strongly against the belief that delegation is a threat to a leader’s influence. Due to this some leaders are not comfortable to relinquish some task to their team members and this might stifle the growth of their team members. Actively practicing delegation has been a huge success factor in my career as a leaders. Trusting your team is a major driving force of every motivated team. Leaders need to be very interested in the growth of their team members to enable them transfer some tasks to them whilst given them the right support to succeed. This also gives the leader the opportunity to focus on other strategic areas, get different perspectives to improve performance or develop his/herself more or even offer more support to his/her team members. This week, take the back seat and adequately equip your team members to own specific tasks and you will be amazed with the results. Happy New Week!

The day will not go perfectly.  That’s what I told a great bunch of leaders recently, before their team away day.  We have a great plan and structure for the day.  Preparedness is my superpower! But when a group comes toegther, especially a big group, things will go wrong and things will change. We’ll run out of time on something. Someone will ask a question we didn’t expect. The IT will go down. Someone will arrive 30 minutes late. Someone will leave 25 minutes early. Someone won’t like the lunch. That’s how it goes.  And, so it should because a workshop isn’t my day or the leaders’ day.  It’s the day of everyone in the room. And that’s the joy of coming together and the joy of being part of a team. We are all beautifully human and imperfect. So, in your next workshop or meeting, in these strange times we find ourselves in yet again, be present, be open, be curious, support each other and the people in the room, hold your expectations lightly and have fun together.

As a coach and mentor, it’s important that I ‘take my own medicine’, and one thing I impress on my clients is the value of reviewing progress on a regular basis. As I head off for my holidays, I’ve done a quick ready reckoner of the first six(ish) months of the year and the numbers make interesting reading: ·     Client teams being acknowledged for smashing their targets after a DiamondEDGE strategy, together with mentoring for members = 4 ·     Clients getting promoted whilst having leadership mentoring support = 6 ·     New people recruited to our (wider) team = 6 ·     Countries visited = 8 ·     Flights taken = 27 ·     Kilos lost = 3 ·     Steps taken = 2.4 million The first two bullet points are hugely satisfying in terms of my purpose, as there’s nothing I love more than helping others to excel. The third bullet point is so exciting personally and professionally. Recruiting new people brings fresh ideas and impetus and bears out the success that we’re having as a business. While the last four bullet points remind me just how busy I’ve been (and tell me it’s time for a break!), they’re also a reflection of the many wonderful face-to-face meetings I’ve had around the globe, enhancing my connection with clients and team alike.
