COVERT NARCISSISTS- WHO ARE THEY? What’s their modus operandi? Natalie Mosley Klenotic, author Narcissistic archetypes are strangely intriguing. These people touch every aspect of human life. Most are obviously self-centered, egotistical, vain, cocky, abusive, and belittling. None of these definitions are wrong, but there is more than one kind of narcissist. The odds are, you have been in a relationship or grown up being raised by a narcissist and didn’t even know. When you are in a close relationship with a NARC, you simply know that they aren’t very nice. It eventually dawns on the person that they are in the middle of surviving something very traumatic. A person doesn’t need to be abusive, loud, or overtly hostile to be a narcissist; they can be shy or quiet. But since covert narcissists aren’t as easy to recognize, how do you know you are dealing with one? Watch for their flying monkey. This person will find it hard to believe that the covert narcissist is as atrocious as you have said. They don’t respect you and your truth. Signs The Narcissist is About to Discard, Devalue You. Signs of imminent devaluation and discard by the narcissist: Emotional absence, indifference, and coldness Affected “civility” Constant criticism and denigration Passive-aggression Unfavorable comparisons Setting you up for failure and misconduct Paranoid ideation and pathological jealousy Sudden secret actions (financial or romantic) Public disparagement and humiliation, also with common children Sex withholding or degradation Cessation of all joint activities, especially of a social nature Pervasive distrust and micromanagement   Discard reenacts unresolved separation phase. Individuation depends on devaluation (in order to preserve grandiosity and exit the shared fantasy) and externalization-projection (reversal of internalization-introjection). When either of these two processes fails, hoovering results. So, emotionally, discard precedes devaluation. The narcissist hangs on to his partner only in order to complete the devaluation. Devaluation resembles also the separation phase in adolescence: reactance (defiance), contempt, distancing, negative identity formation, approach-avoidance.
