Family literacy and numeracy practices are paramount when predicting a child's success in school. Caretakers in the home have the ability to model life-changing literacy and numeracy practices in their day-to-day interactions with the children they care for. Estimating how many jumps it will take to get to the end of the driveway or reading street signs out loud with your child can help them develop applied literacy and numeracy practices in their everyday lives. Every parent and every caretaker has the ability to create patterns of resilience, persistence and problem-solving skills when they read with and engage in math skills with their child. These skills are not only important for school, but they are important for navigating adulthood as well! #AdultEducation works to help parents and caretakers recover the skills that they missed to help spark success in the generations after them. Preschool teachers are more likely to look for signs of challenging behavior in young Black children—especially young Black boys than young white boys (Gilliam et al., 2016). This sobering statistic underscores the critical work we do at the Midwest & Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP). Our mission of “Equitable, Responsive Education for All” propels us to address these disparities head-on. We guide our partners through the development of critical consciousness which empowers educators to examine their own implicit biases. This new report from the team at Start Early provides a valuable look at strategies used by six school districts across the county to ensure that young children with developmental delays and disabilities are served in inclusive early care and education (ECE) settings to play and learn alongside their friends with and without disabilities. Currently only 42% (2 in 5) young children with an individualized Education Program (IEP) are served in a inclusive ECE setting. This new report, along with the recent strong federal Policy Statement: Inclusion of Children with Disabilities in Early Childhood Programs https://lnkd.in/gXj_wZgi that utilizes the National Indicators of High-Quality Inclusion https://lnkd.in/eydt7k4R provide a path forward toward inclusion for ALL. The report highlights Atlanta Public Schools and their goal to transition all preschool children with IEPs from self-contained (segregated) classrooms to inclusive classrooms within one year. The U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) needs to hold all states (and in turn school districts) accountable to make meaningful increases in the percentage of preschool age children with IEPs served inclusive ECE settings. #inclusion #inclusionforall #ECSE #earlyintervention
