The Power of Pie in the Face: Why Slapstick Still Slays in Sketches Let's talk physical comedy! Slapstick might seem like a relic of silent films, but it's a timeless technique that can elevate your sketches to hilarious heights. Here's why: Universal appeal: A well-timed pratfall transcends language and cultural barriers. We all understand the humor of physical misfortune (as long as no one gets seriously hurt!). High engagement: Slapstick is inherently dynamic. It grabs attention and keeps viewers engaged, waiting for the next chaotic turn. Character development: A perfectly placed slip-up can reveal a character's personality in a flash. Are they clumsy? Proud? A secret klutz? Versatility: Slapstick can be silly or subversive, heartwarming or edgy. It all depends on how you use it! Thinking of incorporating slapstick into your sketches? Consider these tips: Safety first! Plan and rehearse stunts carefully to avoid injury. Timing is key! The split second between anticipation and punchline is what makes slapstick sing. Less is more. Don't overdo it! A well-placed pratfall is funnier than a barrage of gags. So next time you're brainstorming sketch ideas, don't underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned pie fight. #sketchcomedy #physicalcomedy #comedywriting #creativity #laughoutloud

2 years ago, I didn’t know anything about comedy. Today, I am performing at my first stand-up show 🎤 Here are 5 unforgettable lessons I’ve learned about comedy writing: 1️⃣ Get to the joke quickly: Most of my joke "writing" was actually joke editing. Remove the extra words and context to the punchline early. Get your first laugh quickly! 2️⃣ Get the crowd on your side: People will create judgments of you on-stage. Lighten the mood by joking about your clothing or vibe. The audience can get behind someone who doesn't take themselves that seriously. 3️⃣ Practice, practice, practice: One specific practice - say your jokes aloud like you're talking to a friend. Let them interrupt and ask questions. You'll get a sense of how to speak more casually and what the audience will be naturally curious about. 4️⃣ Write everyday: Observational comedy comes from experience, write what you notice down! When you're used to writing everyday, it gets easier to log your jokes in one place. 5️⃣ Get time under tension: You won't improve your stage presence without a stage. Find local open mics, take a comedy writing class (even if you have jokes ready!) to get feedback, and get more stage time. It's a way to train your nervous system to handle the nerves so you feel more comfortable putting yourself out there. Tell me below, would you ever take a comedy class? 🎭 #Goals #PublicSpeaking #StageFright #StandUpComedy

So after what seems like a lifetime in the wilderness, humour is seemingly back on the menu for 2024.* To anyone who wants to write funny ads - or anything funny - check out this course by Brent Forrester (The Simpsons, The Larry Sanders Show, The Office). While the course is designed to help aspiring comedy writers create their own sitcom from concept to first rewrite, its principles work whether you’re writing a 30-minute episode or a 30-second spot. I took the course a year-or-so ago and it was awesome. Since then I've completed a new spec script as well as vastly improved an existing one that has gained interest from folks working with the BBC and Channel 4. Beyond that, it gave me a much better understanding of what actually makes stuff funny. Brent is super charismatic, enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and I think the 6-week course is something ridiculously cheap like £90, so well worth a look. It's also a lot of fun. Sadly I’m not on commission, just a fan of comedy. Hopefully, together, we can bring it back to advertising. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/ea5ijhve In the meantime, if your scripts are seriously lacking in LOLs, I'm here to help from Monday. #comedy #comeback #humour #advertising #marketing *Kudos to the likes of Mischief @ No Fixed Address, Colenso BBDO and Orchard who got a headstart in 2023.

Strategic Communications & Marketing Leader | Speaker | Mentor | Driving Innovative Brand Stories & Engaging Audiences
🎤 Tonight marks the beginning of my 8-week journey into the world of comedy writing and performance. This idea has been brewing for a while, as I've found myself spending more time at comedy nights in Brighton recently. The laughter, the stories, and the sheer escapism offered by these evenings have become a highlight of my week. 🤔 Why comedy, you might ask? As a comms & marketing pro, mastering the art of storytelling, engaging diverse audiences, and delivering messages with impact are part of my daily bread. Comedy is storytelling with a twist - it teaches you to think on your feet, craft messages that stick, and, most importantly, connect with people on a human level. 🚀 Here’s why I believe investing in a creative outlet like comedy can be transformative, especially in professional fields like ours: - Embracing the unpredictable nature of comedy will open up new pathways for creativity in campaign strategies and content creation. - The ability to hold an audience's attention and deliver your message amidst the unpredictable nature of live performances sharpens your public speaking skills. - Regular doses of humour are a proven way to reduce stress, increase personal satisfaction, and maintain mental health. - Learning the mechanics of humour can improve how you engage with stakeholders and create more memorable interactions. 🎭 Let the fun begin! #PersonalDevelopment #CreativeThinking #Marketing #Comedy #PublicSpeaking #SelfInvestment

What makes you laugh in advertising? And what makes you cringe? Comedy is a powerful tool in selling products, but not all humor is created equal. Have you noticed that 95% of the commercial spots you see are painfully unfunny? They often come across as trying too hard, desperate to be humorous, or just not funny at all. It's hard to say what the culprit is - maybe it's the editing, the writing, quick turnaround, or the client's demands. Whatever it is, it's rare to find a genuinely funny commercial in the mainstream. However, there are some clever and insightful spots out there that are too smart-funny for the average ad buy. They're hidden in the ether and must be sought out. What are your thoughts? Let's discuss what makes a commercial truly funny and what makes us cringe. Share your insights in the comments! #Advertising #Comedy #Commercial #Spots #Creativity

What's one quick giveaway that someone talking to you is nervous, lacking confidence, or even lying? 🤨 They don't look you in the eye. Or if they do, the connection is brief. You can sense that something is off. It's the same on video. It's a skill to learn, because it can seem rather weird to be talking directly to a little red or green light. 🎬 In the on camera world, we call this an eyeline, and it makes a great deal of difference when someone's watching the film, TV show, or video. ✅ Here's a quick tip or two about where to look on camera. And just for fun, what are some of the other telltale signs you can spot when a speaker would clearly rather be doing just about anything else? ------------- 👋 I’m Laura. 🎬🎤 I can help you with your video or voiceover project ... and help you shine on camera yourself. No one can do it for you (unless you hire them) I have 90+ days worth of social media content written, but no one's going to post it for me. I have 10+ pages of stand-up comedy ready, but no one's going to perform it for me. I have 100+ video storyboards made, but no one's going to put them together for me. I have 50+ songs composed, but no one's going to record them for me. I have 5 movie scripts started, but no one's going to finish them for me. I have a new magazine designed, but no one's going to publish it for me. I have 5 books started, but no one's going to read them for me. I have a new global initiative program, but no one's going to run it for me. Everything you do starts with you. No one's going to do it for you. #leadershipjourney #productivity

Make your copy more Rocky... There is no 'right' way to deliver a script. Sure, there are better and worse ways. But there's no ONE way. I sometimes encounter this in directed sessions. A client will have decided all the emphasis in advance. So the recording process is all about me matching that tune. There's nothing inherently wrong with such an approach. I love a client that knows what they want! But... ❌ It's not particularly creative. ❌ It's not particularly surprising. ❌ It's not particularly stimulating. And it's not making the most of a voice actors key offerings: THEM. I am not just my voice. I am all my history and lived experience. That is what I bring to the table with every job. And that's where I typically bring the biggest value. This speech from Rocky, written and performed by Stallone is iconic. I have no interest in trying to imitate his delivery of it. But every single word of it resonates for me. The baseline when commissioning a voiceover is that you get what you want. What makes it more exciting for me is when I give you that AND something unexpected that makes you hear your own words differently. ✅ Because it's the 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 that makes people lean forward. ✅ It's the difference between playing jazz and playing scales. ✅ It's giving some Rocky-ness to the rhythm... That's where the gold lies. #voiceover #voiceacting #mediaproduction #videoproduction #voicedirector
