Decrease in academic contribution to Gen AI research. As published in this paper (https://lnkd.in/gcyU7HTT), there is an increasing divide between academic and industry for Gen AI research. The main reasons for the divide are : 1. Lack of funding in academic institutions for training multi million dollar LLM. 2. Lack of Engineering know-how to build and operate specialised hardware. 3. Lack of access to large GPU clusters. As a result, the consequences are : 1. Lack of "add-on" effect for models withheld by the industry. 2. Lack of scrutiny of the models.
