In the wake of the tragic and heartbreaking events surrounding the fatal shooting of Nicholas Nembhard, a young Black man experiencing a mental health crisis on February 19, our hearts ache for his family, friends, and the entire community impacted by this profound loss. It is unfathomable to seek assistance in a moment of vulnerability, only to witness such a devastating outcome shortly thereafter. As a restorative justice organization, we understand the deep wounds inflicted by incidents like these, both on individuals and the community at large. Healing and restoration can only begin with meaningful accountability. We stand alongside those mourning Nicholas' passing, offering our unwavering support and solidarity as they seek answers at this difficult time. The recurrence of incidents involving police use of force, particularly against marginalized communities and those struggling with mental health, is deeply troubling. Each life lost in these circumstances reflects a systemic failure to provide adequate support and intervention. While we acknowledge the complexities inherent in such situations, we also demand accountability, transparency, and constructive dialogue. We implore authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nicholas' death and to engage openly with the community throughout this process. Furthermore, we shine a light on the countless grassroots organizations poised to address the needs of our community, including mental health support, if only essential funding were prioritized accordingly. In the midst of pain and sorrow, CJI would like to offer our support to those impacted by this tragedy. Our organization is here to provide a safe space for dialogue, healing, and support for all those affected. We offer our resources and expertise to collaborate with our community in developing and facilitating restorative processes that honor the dignity and humanity of everyone involved. Let us unite in our commitment to creating a future where every member of our community feels secure, valued, and heard. Together, let us strive towards a more just and compassionate society where such tragedies are relegated to the past.

#GrenfellInquiry Phase 2 Member of public asked why the #Grenfell families + core participants will receive early sight & brief of the @grenfellinquiry phase 2 report & in-advance of the formal public release on Wed 4th Sept 2024. This is in accordance with rule 17 of the Inquiry Rules 2006, families & other core participants will be provided with copies of the report on Tuesday 3 September 2024 under embargo. Given the sensitivity of the inquiry & material being presented - its essential families receive this early closed door brief before public release. This will understandably be a very emotional time for many & anticipate mental health + grief support will be on hand. Also gives the other core participants opportunity to read the findings, and dare I say, get ahead of any crisis communications for those identified as root cause or compounding failures. Assume contentious parties will not attend in person, out of respect for the families, wider community & send their legal council or representatives instead. The inquiry report may also go out with press statements, on stringent press embargo day before, to trusted responsible press. This will allow news outlets prep coverage in this high-profile cases. A live steam briefing & headline findings will go out from the inquiry chair at 11am on 4th September 2024 & the report links will also go live at this time. We have to remember the 72 lost souls & all impacted by this disaster 💚 Press DMs open for independent fire expert comments.

A sombre Sunday. The events in Bondi Junction yesterday were deeply tragic, leaving our community grappling with the shock and sadness of the senseless violence that took lives and critically injured others. In moments of crisis, heroism emerges in unexpected ways. We witnessed incredible acts of bravery from the lone Police officer and also from bystanders, demonstrating remarkable courage and leadership. These actions highlight the strength and resilience inherent in the human spirit. However, it's crucial to acknowledge the psychological impact on loved ones of individuals who have tragically passed away, those who have been injured and those who witnessed the attack, including the broader community. Traumatic events like this can leave lasting emotional scars, affecting mental health and wellbeing. As professionals and community members, it is important to come together to offer psychological support and resources to those affected. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for violence prevention and community safety measures. Working collectively to address the underlying psychological factors contributing to such violence and create a society where everyone feels safe and valued is critical. Let's remember the lives lost, support those who are grieving, and commit to fostering a community built on compassion, understanding, and psychological resilience. More than one-third of children experience at least one traumatic event before they turn 16. Kids who live through trauma are more likely to experience learning problems, increased rates of health and mental health services, increased involvement with the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and long-term health problems. But there is good news. If we can identify struggling families sooner, and offer help that prevents traumatic events, then we can help to break generational cycles of trauma. That is one of the core purposes of our organization, Better Together. If you want to be part of preventing or reducing childhood trauma, then let’s talk. We’re always looking for more volunteers, supporters, and community partners. Learn more about childhood trauma:

#WorldSuicidePreventionDay highlights the mental health struggles faced by officers and the importance of taking action to prevent tragic outcomes. Prioritizing mental health, breaking stigmas, and providing access to resources can help protect those who protect us. Mental health is as important as physical health, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. As September marks National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it is crucial to focus on a group that is often under immense stress—police officers. These individuals are tasked with protecting the public, but their own mental health is frequently overlooked. The challenges they face daily can lead to significant mental health struggles, making suicide prevention efforts within this community a critical concern. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund remains committed to eliminating officer suicides and removing any obstacles to officer wellness through high quality programming, education, and outreach to our nations law enforcement partners. Americas law enforcement officers deserve the highest level of respect and support, and the NLEOMF will continue to endeavor our tireless efforts to bring resources to the exceptional men and women in blue who keep our county safe.

Since launching two years ago, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has fielded 10 million calls, chats, and texts. While this level of engagement is promising, awareness of the resource continues to lag. In fact, only 23% of Americans say they're at least somewhat familiar with 988. But there are reasons for hope as states continue outreach efforts and the federal government works to make call responses more accurate. #MentalHealth #BehavioralHealth

DEI & Mental Health Consultant, Facilitator, & Author of "We've Been Too Patient: Voices From Radical Mental Health
Hey California advocates, national supporters and allies, sad news today- announcement/excerpt from our No on Prop 1. Team conceding below. Full statement: https://www.prop1no.com/ "We almost took down the bear, but it looks like we will fall short. Today, as the principal opponents of Proposition 1, we concede that it is almost certain to pass. The vote on Prop. 1 was closer than it had to be, because Prop. 1 itself is much worse than it had to be. We tried hard to get the word out about the damage this measure will cause. It does not just ‘reform’ the mental health system, it reduces funding for mental health services by redirecting $1 billion per year. Our grassroots campaign was hard-pressed to compete with $20 million on the ‘yes’ side, a campaign so overconfident and overstuffed with cash that they ran a Super Bowl ad. Still, we almost won. Our message and our truth were that powerful. Our campaign was all-volunteer and people-powered. Much of its energy came from women, people of color and people with lived experience with mental health issues. People who had benefited from current Mental Health Services Act programs were the best-positioned to warn Californians about the dangers of Prop. 1. A movement toward coercive treatment is being fed by Prop. 1. This disturbing trend expresses both a frustration about mental illness in our society and a gradual ‘othering’ of people who experience it. We fear for the future when our leaders figure out that forced treatment is both expensive and largely ineffective. How will they tighten the screws later? The fight over Prop. 1’s passage is over. The battle ahead is to protect what we have, and to regain the dignity that all people facing mental illness deserve. We’re not leaving that fight."

The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide". Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. Whether as a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague, or as a person with lived experience, we all have a role to play in supporting those who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. Our actions, no matter how big or small, may give hope to those who are struggling. Encourage understanding about the issue, reach out to people who are struggling, and share your experiences. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You are not alone. Lifeline 13 11 14 Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467.
