Countries in western and central Europe, as well as the United States and Canada, face a mounting threat of direct attack on their homelands.
NATO countries need to prepare for war at home, not just on the fringes, says RAND's James Black.
NATO has a lot of work to do and time is running out. Good overview. The question is whether the leaders of NATO countries will act with the decisiveness and urgency required to meet the current circumstances.
The safest, most conservative assumption is "there is no more high ground." Prepare accordingly. Perhaps that will deter aggression...but if not, then we can at least put up a good fight! Let's hope it doesn't come to that!
Hybrid warfare leverages the interconnected nature of modern societies, where cyber and information domains are as critical as physical territory, to create disruption and chaos across NATO countries.

NATO was founded 75 years ago today. It has played a crucial role in keeping the peace in Europe since its inception on 4 April 1949.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, NATO was created in response to the expansionist ambitions of the USSR. Its mission was to deter and defend the territory of the Alliance. For the past 75 years, it has fulfilled that mission. It has contributed to security and stability.
Today, NATO returns to its original mission of deterring and defending territorial aggression. This is of central importance for the protection of the region as a whole. Rheinmetall is committed to protecting NATO countries with its products and is aware of its responsibility in a changing world.
Today, NATO is confronted with new challenges, such as Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine. Other issues include climate change and growing military capabilities. NATO's future will lie in working with one another and adapting to new threats.

Even in the best-case scenario in which all NATO members meet their defense-spending goals, Europe is 10 years away from being able to defend itself.
Russia may be 3 years from being able to launch an attack on a NATO neighbor. NATO members are belatedly pulling out the stops. They’re held back by supply-chain issues, and one singularly Trumpian concern: protectionism.
Germany and France, the continent’s two biggest powers, disagree over whether to purchase weapons from overseas or take the slower route of procuring in Europe. Many officials think the answer lies in EU-level coordination and are even mooting the establishment of battalions answerable to Brussels.
The annual Munich Security Conference may show how much progress they can make on reaching these goals.

NATO has rapidly expanded since 1992 and the end of the Cold War. As a result, it is stronger than ever before in relative terms versus any potential European adversary, but has all these new countries weakened the backbone of NATO, Article 5, and is there a way to address it?

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, EU Member States view defense as a key issue. In March 2024, the European Commission published the first European Defense Industrial Strategy that established the vision of a European defense industrial policy until 2035. The strategy aims to make Europe defense-ready, encourage intra-EU defense trade and strategic autonomy from the United States and NATO.

Born from the ashes of the Second World War, NATO has maintained peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic area for seventy-five years—and it is stronger today than ever before.
As we mark NATO’s seventy-fifth anniversary, it is essential that we prepare our Alliance for the next twenty-five years—and beyond. That means dealing with the reality of a militarised and aggressive Russia. Europe must urgently increase its investments in our collective defence. Europe doing more does not weaken NATO, it reinforces its foundations.
The best response to Russia’s aggression is strength, resolve, and unity. That is what we must show by inviting Ukraine to join the Alliance without delay. Long-term security in the Euro-Atlantic area will only be possible with Ukraine at the heart of NATO.
NATO is the bedrock of security for more than nine hundred and sixty-million people, spanning thirty-two countries across two continents.
Our Alliance is one of history’s great achievements—and may we never take it for granted.

Like many of you, I am excited to hear the outcomes from the upcoming NATO Summit. I expect some major agreements and corresponding announcements. This is a critical time for the NATO Alliance to set conditions for the near and long term. This opportunity cannot be wasted.
I expect:
- continued support to Ukraine
- increased Europeanization of NATO
- increase in number of nations meeting or exceeding 2% defense spending
- announcement or revitalization of NATO Command and Control and force posture
What do you expect?
