Last night the City of Austin Planning Commission voted in favor of Austin Independent School District's rezoning request that will bring to fruition the creation of affordable housing opportunities for AISD teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, staff and AISD families in the heart of East Austin. For over a decade, and even during my tenure as a former AISD Trustee, I recall many conversations and public meetings with previous AISD Trustees, Council Members and County Commissioners who envisioned reinvesting in the community by utilizing publicly owned land to address our affordable housing crisis. In 2016 I was quoted as saying “We talk about reinventing the urban school district, and we know that we need to take an active role in reinvesting in our communities, particularly in opportunities that will address affordability issues, said AISD Trustee Paul Saldaña, who emphasized the plight of families the district serves as well as its 6,000 teachers, who make an average of $48,000 a year and struggle to find housing near the schools where they work." In November 2023, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the district entering into an exclusive agreement with The NRP Group LLC, the selected development partner for the Coy site. The focus for this site will be on workforce and affordable housing as well as other community benefits. By working with an experienced housing development partner for the Coy site and leveraging the value of district-owned land through a long-term ground lease, the district can achieve the following: -Deliver high quality housing that is affordable for new and experienced teachers, district staff and families to support both attraction/retention of culturally proficient professionals and enrollment growth. -Provide a modernized facility for the Alternative Learning Center that supports state of the art instruction, while addressing cultural identities and safety, to better serve our students. -Generate much needed revenue (through ground lease agreement) for AISD that will not be subject to recapture.
