This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a federal law prohibiting people subject to Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs) from accessing guns. Guns dramatically escalate violence when someone is harming their partner, and DVROs are critical safeguards that mandate their removal. Today's decision is a crucial protection for survivor safety, and we applaud our fellow community partners and advocates who made their voices heard on this issue. As leaders in the domestic violence field, Rainbow is happy to offer insight as to why this Supreme Court ruling is so important, and our Director of Operations, Marci Fukuroda, will be available for interviews for those wishing to learn more. She can be reached at [email protected] For more information on this ruling, please see the statement from the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence in the comments below. Everyone deserves respect, love & safety.

The Supreme Court recently upheld the law prohibiting domestic abusers from having guns. Domestic Violence Protective Orders, or DVPOs, are at the center of the ruling. Also known as a restraining order or 50B order, a Domestic Violence Protective Order is a court order that protects victims of domestic violence from their abusers. In a recent blog post, Suzi Canali, Safe Alliance's Chief Legal Officer, breaks down why DVPOs are so powerful and how someone can obtain one. Check out the post to learn about how a DVPO can provide economic mobility, temporary custody arrangements, safety, and empowerment for survivors in our recent blog post. A reminder for Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVROs in CA) include a host of protections for survivors AND are firearm and ammunition prohibiting. In all 50 states, similar DV civil protection or restraining orders can (for the most part) or must or may include firearm and ammunition prohibitions either under state or federal law (see https://lnkd.in/gmRi4pbb). I'm hoping this month provides folks with opportunities to learn more about how important it is to apply the right tool/legal remedy in these high-risk matters. There is a free webinar coming up this week focusing on California law where I'll be covering more about the importance of fair and effective implementation of DV-specific firearm prohibiting remedies in the state and nationally. Here at WINGS, we are encouraged this morning by the U.S. Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision that upholds a federal law prohibiting people with domestic violence orders of protection from having firearms. Listen to WINGS President & CEO Rebecca Darr's response to ABC 7 Chicago news: https://lnkd.in/e_UW-NJk Today’s decision reverses a troubling ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit that individuals had constitutional rights to possess firearms even if they had an order of protection against them. We know that if an abuser has access to a firearm, the risk of a domestic violence homicide increases 500%. The most dangerous time for survivors is when they are leaving an abusive relationship. Today’s ruling shows that survivors deserve protection and that their lives are valued. This common-sense action saves lives and makes our communities safer. If you or someone you know is in need of domestic violence services, WINGS is here for you. We can help assist with safety planning and resources to obtain an order of protection. Survivor Justice Action is here and we're urging Congress to completely close the 'dating loophole.' Federal law prohibits abusers convicted of dating violence and domestic violence from having guns. Federal law also prohibits domestic abusers from having firearms who are subject to protective orders, but ALLOWS dating violence abusers subject to protective orders access to guns. Congress must close this gap. Here's how you can advocate: 1. Share this post on social media 2. Visit our website (sjaction.org) and stay tuned on how you can get more involved. #SurvivorJusticeAction #BoyfriendLoophole #FirearmAbuse #EndDVNow
