Today marks the thirty-fifth #WorldAIDSDay, so let’s check in. Treatments have come SO far, but the response to this infection has always shone a light on inequities in our health system. Low-income, LGBTQ+, and radicalized communities were hit hardest by HIV, and continue to experience the most stigma to this day. Those inequities are still shaping care today—and not just for HIV/AIDS patients. As we work to build new health systems, let’s make sure everyone sees the benefits of new technology and tools. That’s how we’ll #StopHIV, and that’s how we’ll build better care.

Today is #WorldAIDSDay, and mothers2mothers is joining UNAIDS in their call to decision-makers to fully support the life-saving work of communities and to clear away the barriers that stand in their way—in other words, to “Let Communities Lead”! For over 20 years, the mothers2mothers Mentor Mother model—which sees local women living with HIV trained and employed as community health workers across ten African countries—has shown without doubt that when local women lead, communities get what they need. With 7 years left to make the United Nations Global Goal of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030 a reality, it is time for decision-makers to invest fully in communities so that the full potential of their leadership can be unleashed & allow the world to end AIDS by 2030. Today is World AIDS Day, and it arrives at a particularly timely moment in Aotearoa's political landscape, given the new Governments proposals to scale back gender, sexuality, and relationship education in our school curriculum. Today we come together as a beacon of hope in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. This day serves as a powerful reminder to honour those who have faced the challenges of this virus and to recommit ourselves to a world free from stigma. By fostering empathy and understanding, we can break down barriers and empower our communities to prioritise education, prevention, and support for those impacted. Let us stand together, amplifying our advocacy for comprehensive healthcare, eradicating discrimination, and advancing research. Through united efforts, we pave the way for a future where individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS can live without fear or judgment. "HIV is now relatively easy to manage. However, living with HIV can still carry a stigma that other illnesses, such as cancer, and diabetes, do not." “Let communities lead” was the resounding rally cry of the 35th World AIDS Day, and for @ViiVHealthcare, meaningful community engagement is something we strive towards not just once a year but every day. Our goal is to be here until HIV is not, to effectively end the epidemic. So, it was a no-brainer when I was offered the opportunity to join @HenryBonsu and @AnwarOgrm to be part of a new @ForeignPolicy podcast series called ‘Can we end epidemics?’ that I would I jump at the chance! In this episode we focus on the need to put people and communities first, discussing the power of partnership and how by listening, really listening, to affected communities and then taking action together, we can drive real, sustainable change. Change that takes us one step closer, and then another step, and another, to ending the HIV epidemic forever. #WeWontStop
