What is a Project? The best definition according to Professor Peter Barrett,  Salford University 'It's a means to a means to an end.' Refers to a process or action that is undertaken in order to achieve another goal, which itself is ultimately intended to achieve a final, larger objective. It implies that the initial step is not important or valuable in itself, but only serves as a necessary tool to reach the desired outcome. Example 1: "Going back to University for my Specialization was a means to a means to an end. It was a challenging and expensive process, but it opened up new career opportunities that I wouldn't have had otherwise." Example 2: "Taking this internship was a means to a means to an end. It allowed me to gain experience, which helped me get my dream job." Example 3: Constructing a new public library might not be solely about the building itself, but also about fostering a community hub for education, cultural events, and social interaction. So the projects that we love to do as designers, engineers, architects, and constructors, always we need to keep in mind that they are means to a means to a client's end. And that's important because lean is focused on outcomes.

I’m almost finished my first year at university, and I wanted to share my experience and the lessons I’ve learned: In high school, I believed that getting into a good university was the only way to determine the success of my efforts and that getting into a good one meant that I was progressing in the “correct” direction. I just kept working, with my goal being to get into a good university rather than thinking about the career I wanted for myself. Once I got into the University of Toronto - John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, I thought my life was set from now on, and there was a definitive path for me to follow for the next 5-10 years. Naive, I know. However, I realized that after achieving my goal of getting into university, I hadn't given much thought to what I wanted to gain from it and what my next big goal would be. I always hear from my parents to keep my options open, but being a person who loves to be prepared, I love having a clear end goal for my efforts. I had never opened myself to the possibility of taking risks and exploring the various directions that are open to me. After taking my first-year classes, especially an engineering course (APS112), I am now more unsure than ever about what kind of career I want to pursue. The course allowed me to understand the multidisciplinary nature of architecture and engineering, sparking my interest in many of the engineering aspects of our project, too. What if the conventional architecture path that had been set for me wasn’t what was best?  For the first time, I don't know what my next big goal is. And I am now realizing that is okay. The biggest lesson I have learned from this year is to accept uncertainty. Be okay with living in discomfort. Moving forward, I plan to engage more actively with internships, volunteer work, and extracurriculars, not just as resume builders but as tools for self-discovery and networking. I'm learning to appreciate the journey, knowing that each step, whether it feels like progress or a detour, is valuable. Embracing uncertainty isn't about lacking direction but being flexible and open to opportunities I may not have considered before.  I'm sorry if this post was a ramble, but it speaks to the unstructuredness of my professional life right now. A good university is only the first step in your journey.

As a student of architecture, I've observed that our education often leans heavily on theoretical knowledge, primarily for exam purposes, with limited emphasis on practical applications. Universities and schools expect students to independently acquire practical skills, while firms seek interns who already possess substantial knowledge, professionalism, and advanced design strategies. Internships, ideally, should serve as learning opportunities, yet the reality can be different. It's disheartening when senior architects are reluctant to address our queries, or when our efforts to blend modern technology with traditional methods are met with resistance. This tension can stifle innovation and discourage students from seeking guidance from practicing architects. The journey to securing an internship has been particularly challenging. Many firms do not respond to applications, leaving us in limbo about our status. While some firms recognize potential and encourage growth, others demand a level of professionalism that can be daunting for newcomers. The lack of constructive feedback and communication can be discouraging. Moreover, exploring new fields such as UI/UX is sometimes viewed as abandoning architectural practice, rather than expanding one's skill set. It's crucial to recognize the efforts of students and fresh graduates as they navigate these challenges, balancing passion and practicality. Addressing the low-pay work culture is important, but so is highlighting these experiences to foster a more supportive and nurturing environment for the next generation of architects.
