🏆 Nice job Brisa Sabel, Meryl Keeler, Ayden Woodard, Kaden Wheeler, and Henry Anderson (left -> right) for winning the PI controller tuning competition in my process control class! 🚰 Students formed teams for the competition. I gave the students noisy time series data characterizing the output of a process in response to an impulse input. Using this data, the students developed an empirical transfer function model of the process dynamics. Then, they invoked tuning rules to set the controller gain and integral time constant aimed at making set point changes. I scored the PI controller of each team using a time-weighted integral of the absolute error after making a set point change using their PI controller (within a simulation, using the _secret_ transfer function of the process 🤓 ). The prize is a gift card. I will hold this fun competition every year, from now on!
