DEWA's unwavering commitment to #sustainability drives the UAE's #NetZero goals Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has established itself as a cornerstone in the UAE's ambitious journey towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Under the visionary guidance of the wise leadership, DEWA has launched numerous pioneering projects and initiatives that underscore its steadfast commitment to sustainability and innovation. Central to DEWA's sustainability strategy is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. With a planned production capacity of more than 5,000 MW by 2030 and a total investment of AED 50 billion, the solar park is pivotal in Dubai’s clean energy strategy. Came across this interesting article about the Hatta pumped storage hydroelectric project in Dubai. ANDRITZ, the largest manufacturers of Hydro power units are behind this innovative project, and it's truly an impressive combination of world class engineering and the UAE's unwavering attitude to be at the forefront of a greener future. Nestled amidst Dubai's stunning landscapes, Hatta isn't just about generating power; it's about leading the charge towards a greener, more sustainable future. The scale and ambition of the Hatta project are awe-inspiring. By harnessing the natural landscape of the Hatta region, and creating the regions first Hydroelectric pumped storage unit, it aims to provide renewable energy to thousands of homes, reducing carbon emissions and bolstering energy security in the region. The Al Dhafra #solar project in the UAE is now live. At 2 GW this is the largest single-site solar farm in the world. Located 35 km from Abu Dhabi, the project consists of nearly 4 million solar panels, covering 21 km² of desert. The panels are bifacial, which means they capture sunlight on both sides of the panel to maximise the electricity generated. Al Dhafra is expected to reduce the UAE's carbon emissions by 2.4 million tonnes per year, equivalent to removing nearly half a million cars from the road. There are some other nifty things about this project too: ➡️ During construction, a record-breaking 10 MW of solar panels were installed on average per day. ➡️ The project achieved one of the most competitive tariffs for solar power in the world at just USD 1.32 cents/kWh - this was a new world record when it was signed back in 2020. ➡️ And in case you thought those 4 million panels might get a bit dusty, the project employs a fleet of cleaning robots to keep the panels free from sand and dust. The UAE is one of the sunniest countries in the world and with vast swathes of largely empty desert I expect there are plenty more solar projects to come. This huge solar installation is located in the Middle East. I think it is evident that solar investment makes sense everywhere; because it is less expensive than fossil fuels.

Ground Sourced Heat Pumps could also store solar energy as heat for use at night. Cooling coils on the backs of the solar panels supply heat to the refrigerant (antifreeze) which is pumped to radiators in the shaded ground below at a depth of 2 meters comprising sand during the day and at night the process is reversed, switched into water heating. Given the low temperature differentials in the large area of sand, heat energy may also be banked in the ground during the summer and recovered in the autumn, also able to power steam production, desalination applications, etc. https://lnkd.in/ed7k4ABD
