People often ask me who our biggest competitor is. They expect me to mention another automated parking company and are surprised when I reply I believe our two biggest competitors are 1) conventional parking and 2) change. For every automated parking project, there are probably hundreds of conventional parking garages that are designed and built.
Automated parking has been prevalent in Europe and Asia for 25 years due to their land constraints. The US is facing these constraints primarily on the coasts and automated parking is being employed in order to get these projects parked and built at an increasing level due to the enormous space saving benefits of automated parking. Northern California alone has over 300 installations so they are accepted and proven.
Change is hard when you have been designing conventional concrete garages for years and have a process in place. I believe there is an enormous sales advantage for the design team who presents conventional and automated parking options for their clients to consider. When clients see the space saving possibilities and how this can be translated to additional revenue producing units, an added retail component, more storage, reduced excavation and intermediate parking deck costs they get excited and you, as the design team, are the star and innovator for having presented it when others are not. Differentiation wins.
There is often, I believe, a misplaced notion that once you build a concrete garage there is very little maintenance required so it seems like a safer bet. The other side of that coin is the automated garage will reduce or eliminate costly items such as lighting, HVAC and air change requirements, stair cores, re-striping + steel automated parking systems are greener and less costly than concrete and can be removed to repurpose the space later on when your needs change. Additionally, automated garages are less prone to violence and a more secure way to secure vehicles.
