We kicked off another Smith's Food and Drug Stores to be built in Bluffdale City, Utah. This will be the third Smith's added to the state over the past ~year. Once completed this will be Smith's 57th store in the state.
“Smith’s is an exciting, welcomed addition to our growing community,” said Bluffdale Mayor Natalie Hall. This will be Bluffdale’s first grocery store, and our residents are eagerly anticipating its opening next year.”
During construction, we will recycle 90% of the project’s non-hazardous waste such as scrap wood, metal, cardboard, concrete brick, and plastic as part of Smith’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative.
This project is being developed by the long-committed efforts of the Woodbury Corporation.

At Koval, we are incredibly proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with our wonderful client, Cascade Hardwood LLC, on their Brand Anthem Film. This project truly resonates with our values, and we couldn't be happier to help them make an impact and share the final film!
Please re-share this post to show your support of the hardwood industry as the real story really needs to be heard far and wide! We just attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) meeting where we know that hardwood manufacturing is facing many challenges including labor & telling the story!
"Nature means something different to each of us. It has the power to help us escape the chaos of daily life, or it can bring us all together in a shared appreciation for its beauty. At Cascade, they understand that every piece of lumber they produce has the potential to transform spaces, bringing the warmth and beauty of nature indoors while also safeguarding the forests that provide us with clean air, water, recreation, and vital resources.
Hardwood is like a subtle background to our everyday lives, surrounding us and binding us together. It's often overlooked but resonates deeply with all of us. It forms the theme songs and soundtracks to our days, gives us a foundation for building our future, and brings families together to create lasting memories.
Alder and maple trees, abundant and thriving in the Cascade Mountain Range and the Pacific Northwest, are the dominant hardwood species that Cascade harvests. Their commitment to the ecosystem is unwavering, and they manage their resources thoroughly and scientifically as true stewards of the forest. This long-term perspective ensures that future generations can also depend on these precious resources.
Cascade's dedication to using cutting-edge technology that minimizes waste and prioritizes a safe working environment sets them apart as an industry leader. When you choose Cascade, you're not just getting top-quality hardwood lumber; you're also partnering with a company that values long-term relationships. Their knowledgeable representatives get to know your business and your needs, ensuring a seamless experience.
Cascade is not just a business; it's a way of life—a family that has been committed to this mission for over 50 years and plans to continue doing what they do best for decades to come. They are more than just an Alder manufacturing company; they are dedicated to bringing nature indoors and preserving it for future generations."
We are honored to have played a part in sharing Cascade's story, and we look forward to witnessing their continued success in the years ahead.

Sarah and Ben are changing the game. As stewards of the largest contiguous forest in the Willamette Valley, they have put a premium on habitat creation, diverse forest ecologies and sustainable forest practices. Together they run Zena Forest Products , just an hour south of PDXNext. Yesterday they were gracious enough to show us their forest, their mill, their wood sheds, and new flooring manufacturing facility. Oregon white oak is an amazing tree- climate resilient, hardy and super durable. But it has historically been “tossed in the canyon” by commercial logging operations that favor Douglas Fir and clearcut by
farms and vineyards.
Ben Deumling and his family saw an opportunity. What if a market was created for this and other hardwoods that typically get tossed on slash piles? Forest ecologies benefit when managed for tree diversity and these hardwoods help minimize forest fire intensities. And local timber communities, who’ve had a rough couple of decades, have a lot to offer in providing the skills and knowledge to transition to a more diverse timber economy.
All of the new wood floor at PDXNext has been made by Zena Forest Products from oak trees on and near their ridge top. And all that wood was cut on an outdoor saw in a barn, planed by a 1946 wood planer that was brought back to life by Ben after decades at Oregon State University, stacked for a year to dry and then taken to their new parquet flooring shop to be made into tiles for the new terminal. This project allowed Zena to scale up and invest in North America’s only parquet flooring machine which - because it utilizes smaller ‘sticks’ - puts historically discarded wood species into play. We’re fortunate to have found each other and looking forward to the first deliveries next month. (And, because someone will ask, yes there will be #pdxcarpet … but you’re going to love this Oregon Oak!)
