So as Pride month winds down I wanted to share what it means to me. Like other causes it shouldn't be something that is just celebrated and supported just for one month a year, but it is it is a time to highlight it as a cause. It's not just about posting a rainbow flag and posting a few supportive social media posts isn't enough it's about continued support and creating spaces that everyone feels welcome in. It is a moment to not only celebrate friends, colleagues and loved ones in the LGBTQ+ community, but also to recognize the challenges faced by so many in professional environments, to honor the courage it takes to be oneself even when it risks judgement, and is a time for us to strive to make sure every voice is heard in our workplaces so that we can all belong and thrive For me as a recruiter my job is all about connecting with people, hearing their stories, learning about who they are, and I love that. I tell every candidate that is going to interview with a client of mine, that for me one of the most important tips I can give them is "be your authentic self". I say this because I truly believe people want to hire people not resumes or list of achievements. As a people manager of hybrid, in-person and remote reps, doing team events has always been a challenge. I've always found volunteering with your team to be the most value-able and enjoyable, but it's surprisingly a challenge to find a non-profit that can logistically take a large number of volunteers, especially for a one-time event. But in a cis-hetero male-dominated industry like web development (where I am part of), this can be tough, especially when you're queer.
