What can make or break a city's violence reduction strategy? California Partnership for Safe Communities (CPSC) and the University of Pennsylvania Crime and Justice Policy Lab convened a diverse panel of national experts to consider this challenge.  Building on our decades of experience as well as the growing body of violence prevention evidence, we wrestled with why so few cities are able to make sustainable progress in reducing community violence at the city level. One key finding: effective political governance and strong public management are critical to a successful gun violence reduction strategy. New report published by Centre for Social Justice & Justice and Care looks at the impact of #criminalexploitation, which is not defined within Modern Slavery Act 2015. The report does not just focus on individual victims but also the impact on their families, neighbours and wider communities who all suffer as a result #crimeandasb #antisocialbehaviour. The report makes a raft of recommendations. Here are just a few... ♦️ #Cuckooing to be made a criminal offence ♦️ #Neighbourhoodpolicing to be prioritised and resources increased ♦️ Increased training to those professionals likely to come into contact with victims ♦️ All modern slavery victims eligible for social housing should be exempt from local connections and given priority. This should include victims of criminal exploitation and cuckooing. ♦️ Criminal exploitation to be defined within the #modernslaveryact15 ♦️Support to be offered to those victim to criminal exploitation (especially children) ♦️To roll out the child trafficking guardian service nationally. Vulnerable children are at risk, but whose risk is it anyway? Youth Justice grants coming soon! Applications for the 2024–2025 Community-based Crime Action grants are set to open on 17 June 2024, with double the funds and double the chance of successful applicants across Queensland. We’ve combined Rounds 1 and 2, so the funding has also combined to total $2.5 million! Grants of up to $75,000 will be available per successful application aimed at early intervention, prevention and diversionary solutions that address local youth crime issues and areas of community concern. We are seeking to engage local communities, small to medium organisations, community groups and local businesses to consult with their communities and engage local stakeholders to identify, design and deliver programs and services that positively engage young people in their area. Applications close 15 July 2024. This is a topic of national importance. Each State and Territory is facing similar issues and trying to work out the best way forward to tackle crime in general and youth crime in particular. Ultimately the success of alternative programs requires significant investment (but the cost and benefit of that investment may be less than the cost of incarceration).
