✉️ It's #GCSE Results Day! Three things we can see from the results: 1️⃣ 𝗔 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵-𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 - London, the South East and South West had between 21.2% and 28.5% achieve 7 A grades or higher, compared to 17.8% in the North East and 18.3% here in Yorkshire and the Humber. Could this be due to less investment in the North? 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱 - Although this cohort faced disruption from the pandemic, strikes and closures due to RAAC (remember the then Education Secretary's infamous hot mic moment?), the percentage of A grades or above was 1% higher than 2019. 3️⃣ 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 - There has been a surge in GCSE Computer Science, but this is still male dominated, despite girls outperforming boys again. There's much to do to address this... ...which brings me on to the work Ahead Partnership does. We have all felt the recent disruptive shift in the working environment, right? Digital transformation both removed and created jobs. DOT co-designed the Digital Jobs Program to equip underserved youth with vital digital skills tailored to market needs. The digital skills delivered through the peer-to-peer model have been context-specific, varying from country to country, and based on a robust market needs assessment to ensure that training goals meet market demands. A LONG-TERM SKILLS STRATEGY // “Having a genuinely strategic long-term plan and sticking to it meant we weren’t blown about too much by political headwinds…Having clear goals with a clear message was really helpful to everyone involved with strategy, policy and delivery.” Championing an ‘each and every’ approach, which has been at the heart of the Strategic Economic Plan, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has undoubtedly achieved its goal to become a national exemplar for skills, social mobility and inclusivity. Yet as skills director Michelle Rainbow tells us, this has not been accomplished without overcoming major challenges, not least the turbulence wrought by the pandemic and Brexit, as well as the revolving door at Downing Street and in Whitehall since 2014. Through a clear and consistent plan and a commitment to work with further education colleges, schools, universities and independent training providers, the LEP has established the excellent relationships and trust required to make a difference and have a serious impact. Not only has this supported numerous people back to work, but other goals such as delivering digital inclusion, retaining graduates in the North East, and establishing a pipeline of skilled workforces to attract new investment and foster business growth have become a reality, with the North East even chosen to pilot various initiatives, including the hugely successful Gatsby Career Benchmarks. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining colleagues and partners in discussing the first-ever State Opportunity Index – a resource that I think will be particularly relevant for institutions who seek to better serve their students in achieving the careers and economic opportunities they seek. I want to especially thank my fellow speakers, including: Aimee Guidera, Secretary of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia Wil Del Pilar, Senior Vice President, The Education Trust ardine williams, Vice President for Workforce Development, Amazon. Member of the Board of Visitors, William & Mary John King, Chancellor, The State University of New York And colleagues Stephen Moret, David Clayton and Nichole Torpey-Saboe, PhD. The State Opportunity Index was developed to support states in their efforts in five priority areas: Clear Outcomes, Quality Coaching, Affordability, Work-Based Learning, Employer Alignment. Taken together, the five priorities provide leaders with a holistic framework for improving both policy and practice and supporting more equitable pathways to opportunity. One thing is clear from our panel discussion: this work is urgent. Far too many Americans are facing challenges in navigating the path from education to opportunity and too many employers are facing challenges in finding the talent they need to thrive. The State Opportunity Index provides a framework for college and university leaders, policymakers, and employers and business leaders to work together to strengthen the connection between education and opportunity.
