507 Medical and 84 Dental Checkups in Impoverished Filipino Villages When Sickness Equates To Death and there is no greater joy in serving those who cannot repay you….. Wow… we have just returned from our 11 day medical mission to the Philippines. Our team of 19 comprised of Doctors, Nurses, A Wardsman and Medical Health Specialist and plenty of room for non-medical people like me. And having 5 children on the trip brought tremendous joy to my heart. The common themes are extreme gratitude, and many members of the team had an emotional epiphany overwhelmed. More on those in another post. Medical missions require about 12 months of planning and are a collaborative partnership between us here at Trips+, my sister Stephanie Lindores who with highly experienced nurse Mark Griffiths designed the flow of the day with input from all our team. And we couldn’t have done it without the local partnership of Gawad Kalinga, the largest NGO in the Philippines who contacted the local health units and barangay chiefs to organise everything on the ground. Our team was incredible, caring and compassionate and we had two aims: 1. Provide free medical and dental primary care. 2. Provide long term solutions via diet, breast screening and dental hygiene education. Sickness for the poor is equated with death. It is a constant fear for the poor. The fact that many many many Filipinos cannot afford to go to the doctor or dentist is unfathomable to us Aussies. That is what makes what we do so special. Giving to people who cannot repay us is one of the greatest joys in life.
