HOT TAKE: I’m actually EXCITED!!! 😆 I know that so many professional women are leaning away from the exclamation mark in their correspondence, but sorry not sorry I’m hanging tough with it. There’s so many ways in which the “soft parts” of us are being ripped away in the professional world. “Don’t say sorry too much.” “Stop speaking in that bubbly voice.” “Don’t use too much pink in those visual assets.” “Don’t put so many exclamation marks in your emails/captions/copy.” As much as the women who push these narratives feel they are “helping” other women; it can be damaging. Listen we’re all living under the patriarchy. Women do whatever they need to protect their careers; especially in male dominated industries. But let’s embrace all professional women, even if we don’t always believe they’re being “professional.” #womeninbusiness #professionalwomen

Women are too often guilty of self-editing. Of finishing a point they've made by asking 'does that make sense' or caveating a request with the phrase 'only if you have time'. In the words of Nicola Kemp from her brilliant article 'Stop Self Editing Yourself Into Oblivion' it is self-sabotage and a form of self-defence. You don't want to be told you're too direct, too aggressive, too distant, too aloof, too cold - or a whole host of other misguided and misjudged things - so of course you self-edit. But the thing is this allows the experiences of women (and other underrepresented groups) to continue being ignored. It allows means great ideas and new ways of thinking aren't being considered. Don't silence yourself. You'll have value to add and by speaking up you can help shift the narrative for women. #womeninwork #creativebusiness #companyculture #workafter

Public speaking is actually easier for women. Hear me out. One of the things that SO many females default to in the workplace is self deprecation. We want to be liked — we often *need* to be liked in professional circumstances in order to get by. When it comes to speaking in front of an audience, I’ve found I end up doing exactly the same thing. I’ll subconsciously use humour to take the piss out of myself, and in turn, it builds relatability. It often makes the audience care for you. So, looking at one of the silver linings of the way women are conditioned to act in these scenarios… …it actually does make public speaking that little bit easier.

Happy International Women's Day! I could probably write a novel about all of the amazing and influential women in my life. From my mom who is tough as nails but incredibly kind, my older sisters who paved the way for me and gave me great examples of how to be strong and independent, some incredible bosses, co-workers, the best friends, girls I met in bar bathrooms... the list goes on. From someone who has been labeled all of the below and worse, my advice is to keep going. Keep doing it, keep being you. Lead with kindness but don't let anyone tell you that you can't take up as much space as you are. Don't let anyone make you question who you are at the core because it may be too much for them. Help the women around you, it's not a competition between us. To the women who are labeled... This International Women's Day, take a moment to see yourself as others do. It's a perspective we don't often have but here's a piece of writing I found in my youngest son's homework book last year that I found eye-opening. 1. The things you may feel are a dreadful compromise (the midweek pasta bake when you've run out of inspo and time) are to others, a source of great delight. 2. The things you may feel guilt about (working away a lot or retraining as a "barasdoor") are to others, a source of inspiration. 3. The play-to-win approach (even to Scrabble) you may try to moderate is to others, a likeable trait. Happy International Women's Day. You are a role model even if you don't always feel like one.

Women's Day The Writing Genie and I ( it is because of the Writing Genie) have been asked to do a 5 minute speech for Women's day coming up, on overcoming challenges as a woman. Given my experience and challenges are yesterdays news, I am curious what would you like me to speak about. The three things that come to our mind is 1. Know yourself 2. Play to your strengths 3. Rise above the environment. The third one is not hot I think. People want to change the environment. So many D I experts weaving their stuff. I feel a fraud if I preach inclusiveness. That will happen if we are mindful of whom we have around us. Can be a battle to connect, but what is life without challenges? Love to know what you think would be helpful. Even for Men.

During my 20-year professional journey, I've gained valuable insights into human behavior in various workplaces, primarily as a professional woman and single mother overcoming challenges. Interviewing different professionals women, it was clear to me that resilience and assertiveness were crucial skills that needed to be developed to be able to navigate through difficult corporate environments that could be marked by abuse, discrimination, violence, harassment, disrespect and others. As I've learned, women often face harsh labels for assertiveness. It's a stark contrast to men, who are praised for similar behavior. This gender bias echoes themes from the series movie "Mad Men" as well. Although not really based on reality, it is my opinion that the movie manages to capture the corporate paradox from the '50s that still persists today, hindering progress towards gender equity and inclusion. Inspired by these experiences, I'm excited to work on my upcoming book, "Corporate for beginners- Your ultimate survival guide- NAVIGATE, ADAPT, OVERCOME", my 6th book which is aimed to shedding light on human behavior and its impact on women in the corporate world.
