Last May, amidst the excitement of #CanadaPlays, Doctors Gray Atherton and Liam Cross from the University of Plymouth made a profoundly meaningful contribution on the intersection of #autism and #boardgaming at Canada’s premiere tabletop game industry trade show and conference experience, #CanadaPlays.    ➡ Over the past few years, Doctors Atherton and Cross surveyed over 1,600 board gamers and conducted over 35 gamer interviews in their work with Asmodee’s program to support scientific #research on boardgames, #GameinLab.    Among the 1,600+ board game hobbyists surveyed, they measured that 25% were neurodiverse people and that 4.7% were autistic people (versus 1% within the general population). Reporting a wide range of board gamer demographics and various motivations and preferences within the hobby, the researchers presented how these insights may be useful to #gamedesigners and those interested in using board games for #educational or #therapeutic purposes. READ MORE: 15 huge games that we can’t wait to play in 2024 Anonymised in IGN‘s recent report on the state of the industry and the layoffs in 2023, the developer claimed that the game cost Ascendant Studios £99million ($125million) in a budget that priced development at £67million ($85million) and marketing and distribution at £31.7million ($40million). “Sure, there was some serious talent on the development team, but trying to make a triple-A single-player shooter in today’s market was a truly awful idea, especially since it was a new IP that was also trying to leverage Unreal Engine 5,” they explained. Immortals Of Aveum Credit: Electronic Arts “What ended up launching was a bloated, repetitive campaign that was far too long.” The developer alleged that they, along with almost half of the staff at Ascendant Studios, were laid off only a few weeks after the launch party. The party itself had an odd atmosphere, they recalled, with developers asking senior staff whether or not Immortals Of Aveum was doing well enough to warrant the celebration. Another employee who is apparently still at Ascendant Studios said that Immortals Of Aveum was trying to be shorter than the average first-person shooter, aiming to appeal to an audience that was tired of live-service trends. “It’s not a sequel or a remake, it doesn’t take 400 hours to beat, has zero microtransactions, no pointless open world grinding. Although not everyone loved it, it reviewed pretty well, currently sitting at a 74 on Open Critic and a Mostly Positive on Steam,” they shared. “No one bought it.” Immortals Of Aveum. Sales were a “tiny fraction” of what was anticipated for Immortals Of Aveum, and so, the developer let go of 40 members of staff in September 2023. “For all the things Ascendant did right (paying people well, an entirely remote studio, little overtime until the end, chill environment with lots of freedom to grow, respecting QA, hiring juniors, etc.), it did not work out,” concluded the second source. Men and women both play video games, but the ratio of involvement is always lower. This is because of a variety of factors, including harmful environments and unethical behavior, which we think is gradually changing. Additionally, we want to encourage more women to work in game development. Yes, we want them to actively participate in the development of the games in addition to merely playing them. When it comes to programming, the lack of female artists and tech artists at gaming studios over the previous few years is quite depressing. Happy Monday Gamers, I think I've just about recovered from Guildford.Games fest on Friday. What a day!! Being able to catch-up (even if briefly) with the likes of Andy Coley, Holly Blockley (CertIHR), Tim Browning, Oli Lavender, Pascal Gane and Alex Camm was a pleasure. Meeting Jon Torrens, John Stopforth, CertEd and Nicola Head in the flesh for the first time too. I was present at a number of the panels that were set up through the day and I want to speak about one of them specifically. Lauren Kaye hosted a #diversityandinclusion / #EDI panel with Dom Shaw, Naveen Yadav and Elizabeth P., it was FANTASTIC!! 😍 Each of the speakers stories were equally inspiring and filled with challenges. It was quite emotional how each of them overcome their individual barriers, and I took a lot away from the almost 60 minutes back and forth. Including....... How the room was half empty 😪 In comparison to the panel about #AI where it was standing room only, it got me thinking 🤔 With so many members of the #gamescommunity in some way shape or form also a marginalised person, why was that room not filled with industry leaders, prepared to listen and understand how they can change their studios for the better? We already know that an inclusive team, with diverse set of people and backgrounds, make better more commercially viable games, it's a fact. Players want accessibility, players want options when it comes to characters and narratives, players want EDI friendly games. In 2024, it should not still be the case that a brave few, with their heads above the parapet, are asking nicely to be included, nor should they have to break down doors or shatter glass ceilings, the door should be left wide open with a welcome mat. Let's use the comment section for debate/solutions, and hope that next year, an EDI panel can tell their stories to an auditorium!!

Trailer I made for our prototype civic game: 'Septima' The Game: It is a point-and-click, narrative-based game where players follow our main character, Septima, through a day in her life. Throughout this day she visits a poll location, her school, and a job location, each with respective mini-games, where she will experience discrimination based on her race and gender. During these scenarios players will learn about their rights as citizens of the U.S. and how what has happened to Septima, and many minorities historically, is wrong, and that by now understanding our rights, we can all pave the way for a better future. 

Video games can be good for children…? I believe EVERYONE - children and adults - benefits from learning how to embrace your creativity and find your voice. It's not just painting a picture or writing a poem - it's learning how to think and express yourself and your ideas. How to question the world, stay curious and make connections others wouldn't. How to appreciate originality and spot opportunities to do something different. Without creative thinking, so many of the world's innovations wouldn't have happened, and the world would be less diverse, less efficient and less beautiful. The government have been slowly eroding the funding to creative arts for decades in schools but this is EXACTLY where it should be getting taught. Creativity is essential for maths. For science. For engineering. And for the creative industry too (one of the UK's biggest 'exports', by the way).
