Kenya-based insurtech PULA has successfully raised US$20 million in Series B funding to bolster its efforts in providing agricultural insurance to farmers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The funding round was led by global investment manager BlueOrchard Finance Ltd, leveraging its InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF) strategy aimed at providing vulnerable populations in emerging markets with access to climate insurance. Additionally, the IFC - International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Hesabu Capital, and existing investors participated in this significant investment round. PULA Secures $20M In Seed B Funding Kenyan insuretech pioneer PULA, specializing in agricultural insurance, just closed a significant $20 million Series B funding round led by BlueOrchard via its InsuResilience strategy. The investment aims to expand insurance coverage for smallholder farmers in emerging markets, especially those vulnerable to climate change. Other investors include the IFC, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Hesabu Capital. PULA started in 2015 when Rose Goslinga and Thomas Njeru noticed a critical challenge for millions of smallholder farmers: the constant threat of climate-induced disruptions like floods, droughts, and pests. During the Agri Investment Indaba, Pascal Siphugu, MD of Land Bank Insurance, highlighted crucial insights. Global studies in 2022 showed 265 million insurance policies, with only 3% allocated to Africa, lacking the 80% global subsidy. Siphungu identified a need for Public-Private partnerships to support African farmers. In South Africa, only 27% of farmers are insured, revealing a significant coverage gap. Land Bank Insurance commits to addressing this gap with tailored solutions. Siphugu stressed collaboration between industry and government for small-scale farmers' success, posing a key question: How can the industry collectively bring substantial value to farmers as funders, policymakers, and essential stakeholders in agriculture?
