Today, we hosted an enlightening discussion, "Creating Equitable Healthcare in the Black Community" featuring Dr. Larry Wallace Jr. of Black Men's Health Clinic and Seneca Harrison of Quality Clinical Research moderated by LaChanel Hemphill of Digitas Health. They shared their expertise and perspective on how we can work together to bridge the healthcare gap and they acknowledged the inequalities the Black Community faces while discussing ways to address the barriers. This panel was a powerful reminder that while the challenges are significant, so is our collective capacity for innovation and change. #HealthEquity #BlackMensHealthClinic

According to the Listening to Black Californians study, more than 1 in 4 Black Californians avoid healthcare due to concerns they will be treated unfairly or with disrespect. Here are some ways you can take control of your healthcare experience: • Prepare for your visit by doing your research first. • Speak up if you feel like your concerns are being dismissed. • Choose your own providers, and switch if you don’t feel comfortable. • File a complaint and hold your healthcare providers accountable for their actions. Join our movement. Become a member. Together, let’s do our part in making the healthcare system work better for us and our community. UCLA Health recently hosted the annual convening of the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN), where more than 300 leaders from 55 health care centers across the United States joined together to strategize improvements to community health. Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System, highlighted the importance of the conference during the CEO/Leadership plenary session, saying, "I think it gives us an opportunity to be a learning environment for how we can work together with our community to really start making some significant changes." Medell Briggs, MD, MPH, MSHS, chief of UCLA Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, co-led a session on mitigating racial and socioeconomic health inequities by investing in under-resourced communities, saying, “If we’re going to continue to promote greater health, especially within historically marginalized and divested communities, we knew we had to lean into those communities and try new community-partnered approaches to transform health and social well-being.” Read more: https://ucla.in/463bJCP

At CHCF, we believe in a health workforce that mirrors the diversity of our state, especially for the 15 million Californians enrolled in Medi-Cal. How can California achieve this? 🔍 Improving data disaggregation to understand patient language needs better. 💡 Increasing scholarship funding and loan repayment resources for people passionate about serving underserved communities. 🏫 Advancing holistic admission processes in California’s health profession schools to foster diversity. 🤝 Strengthening partnerships between California Community Colleges and California State Universities to bolster allied health professions. As CHCF’s Kathryn E. Phillips shared at a recent Assembly Health Committee hearing: “Our health workforce is a critical infrastructure. It’s the infrastructure of care. And just like our roads or our bridges, we need regular assessment. We need infrastructure upgrades. Our workforce deserves more. Our patients need care.” We were honored to testify alongside our many partners working to build the representative workforce we all want and need: California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, California Black Health Network (CBHN), Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, Roots Community Health Center, and AltaMed Health Services, among many others.
