Let's just look past how young I look compared to the Santa-in-waiting I see when I now look in the mirror. I want to tell you a story... These are the MBNA geeks - the centre piece of a major rebrand we launched (with loads of help from TBWA\MCR) back in 2015. It was great work, and helped to supercharge MBNA brand recognition. But, that's not the story. Fast forward to a year later, and to mark the launch of the second phase of the campaign (which saw Jenny Monks buy a van - more on that another time), we bring the geeks into the MBNA head office in Chester to meet the broader team. It was a great day, with the geeks hamming it up for the staff, and generally being wonderful. To launch the campaign internally, I'm joined on stage by Paul Sinclair. The event is screened throughout the building - so about 2,000 people watching. Paul and I tag-team on telling the story behind the work, before sharing the ad and bringing the geeks out on stage. It was a great event. The only issue: as I walk off stage, feeling pretty bloody good about the event - one we (or, more accurately, Jenny Monks) had carefully managed down to the last detail - I realise that I was given a gift by my 4 year-old daughter before I left for work. A fairy sticker had been deposited on my arse, and as a 'walker' when presenting, it had 100% been visible to those even without a keen eye. How did I go from working with the Monster Munch monsters, to doing brand deals with some of the biggest celebrities in the world such as Kylie, Robbie Williams, One Direction and Ariana Grande? I think it is because I have built my experience in this area over many years of working on both sides of the table. I have been the brand person at Coca-Cola or Walkers, and then have represented the talent as their record label at EMI, and then as their agent at CAA. This has given me an invaluable ability to understand the needs of both parties when it comes to putting together brand endorsements for celebrities. However, there's one strategy that stands out - making the celebrity a "co-owner" of the company. Take Mint Mobile, for example, where Ryan Reynolds became a co-owner after being brought on board, leading to a whopping $1.35 billion sale. Does live athlete access help audience engagement? I love the ‘Walk & Talk’ segment executed by CBS & PGA TOUR during live coverage of certain PGA events. It has the authenticity of content you would expect to watch on YouTube with the interview style and camerawork, whilst being executed during an elite event, in this case the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte. The relaxed interview format executed during the action means it grabs the viewers attention, you avoid stock responses, and instead unlock true insight. Of course, not every sport has the opportunity for ‘in action’ access like this, but I love the effort of all parties to push live content outside of comfort zones.
