I guess it's never too late to share! I want to take some time to reflect on my incredible internship journey at Digitas North America in their Atlanta office. It still feels like yesterday when I got the chance to be in a place that kind of felt like home when I was leaving it. Under the brilliant guidance of my hiring manager, Courtney Tambasco, Jana Zdancewicz, and brilliant boss, Christian Rogers, I had the opportunity to dive deep into the world of media-fueled creativity. Their mentorship not only sharpened my skills but also illuminated the path of creativity and precision that I aspire to follow. My time at Digitas was more than just an internship; it was a voyage of discovery, ideation, and real-world application of everything I learned in my past and at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. From adopting a media-first thinking approach to working on campaigns for illustrious clients like Walmart and Crocs, I was granted a vast canvas to bring my ideas to life. Although moving to Atlanta presented its challenges initially, it eventually became a nurturing ground for my ambitions. It is one year today! One year of? Read below 👀 Last July ‘23, after my Marketing Master degree graduation, I was enjoying my - well deserved I should say - holiday in New York, and it is right in NYC where I received the phone call that marked the beginning of my experience in Procter & Gamble. On the 20th of September ‘23 I began as an Intern within the Media Team in the Health & Oral Care category👇🏻: 1. ✍🏻 Responsibility from day 1: thanks to my Manager and my Team I had the opportunity to face huge challenges first-hand and manage my own projects. 2. 🎖️Impact: each choice I took, I perceived the impact it had directly on the business and on the consumer. 3. 🤝🏻Team working: I felt the power of P&Gs community since the beginning. Each person is there to help and to guide you; you can learn so much from each other. After an exciting 6-months, on May I had the fortune to embark a new journey on the role of PHC Biddable Specialist, getting closer to the category and having the opportunity to continue my growth path in this amazing company. In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are shining a spotlight on some of the amazing women we have working for us at Citi Trends. Ursula is a Senior Merchandise Planning Manager who is passionate about analyzing data to help make decisions that will positively impact the business. Here is what she shared with us.   Q: What do you love most about your job? A: There are 3 aspects that I love about my role as a Senior Manager, Merchandise Planning: 1.     I absolutely love to analyze data and it is great to see data points turn into actionable strategies. 2.     Early in my career, I sometimes felt unsure and uncertain about business approaches, so being an effective leader that invests time in team development, mentorship and coaching is very important to me to train/develop the new generation of merchandise planners. As my tenure within Cititrends, I have had several team members that have been promoted under my leadership. 3.     Providing top notch customer service.       Q: What challenges have you faced in your career? A: With the ever-changing economic conditions, it is often different to project how those challenges affect the retail business. However, effective trend analysis helps me make the best decisions to positively impact the business.   Q: What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far? A: Seeing people that worked on my team succeed in their career. I love fostering potential and promoting team members.   Q: What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your career? A: The most important lesson I have learned is to advocate for yourself. No one knows your full potential more than yourself and you must have the confidence to speak up and knowledge to back it up.    Q: What advice would you give someone who has just graduated from college and is starting their first job in their desired field? My Career Reinvention: From Setbacks to Success at Ogilvy UK Hey everyone, I wanted to share a bit about my career journey - it's been quite a ride! Between 2021 and 2023, I found myself in two roles that were a tough fit for me. They pushed me out of my comfort zone, and despite giving it my all, I struggled with managing upwards, proving my value, and adapting to new skillsets in unfamiliar contexts. When I left those roles, I won't lie, I felt like I'd hit rock bottom. The sense of failure and shame was overwhelming, and my confidence took a serious hit. But you know what they say about hitting rock bottom? The only way is up! So, I started climbing. I sought help from therapists and coaches, buried my nose in self-development books, and leaned on my amazing network of friends and connections. I joined a choir (yes, really!), exercised regularly, spent time outdoors, and cherished quality time with my family - all these things helped heal my mental health. During this transition, I took on freelance work to rebuild my confidence. This not only helped me regain my professional footing but also prepared me for job interviews with renewed credibility and high self-esteem. Fast forward to now, and I'm eight months into an exciting role at Ogilvy UK as a Strategy Director. I've had the privilege of working with clients like the International Olympic Committee and F1, helping them better engage their fans. I've collaborated with brilliant and kind strategists, creatives, technologists, and account directors who have made my transition seamless. I've also been exposed to exciting areas of behavioural science and have developed more skills in using AI to make my job easier. The warm and friendly company culture, coupled with a drive for excellence, has made my experience at Ogilvy truly rewarding. If there's one thing I've learned from this journey, it's the importance of self-kindness and clarity. One practical tip? Reflect on every job you've ever had - write down what you liked and disliked about each role. I'm thrilled to announce that I've joined L'Oréal's social team for the Luxe division! ✨ L'Oréal is a brand I've always admired, with memorable marketing campaigns like "Maybe it’s Maybelline" forever etched in my mind. Sharing this achievement on my feed is a significant step because it's outside my comfort zone to discuss my accomplishments openly (even though I do social media), but here I am. :) In my first two weeks, the more I delved into the various brands under the L'Oréal umbrella, the more I was impressed by our commitment to transparency and sustainability. I am genuinely excited to be part of a company that strives to improve and grow, with values that resonate deeply with me. Now, let me share a bit of my journey with you: Finding a job after graduation was a struggle. 🥊 Many recent graduates can relate to my experience and the pressure that comes with it. We were told graduating college was the golden ticket to landing a good job. Still, today’s job market is different—entry-level positions often require years of experience, yet don’t provide the opportunities to gain that experience. After graduation, I completed an internship, which taught me patience and valuable skills, but it wasn't a full-time job. I was constantly questioned about my career choices, the value of my major, and the pressure to pursue higher education. I want to let everyone know that it's okay if you're struggling right now, and you shouldn't be ashamed. 💪🛥️ Many of us are in the same boat, and it's a challenging journey. I wanted to share my story to highlight that these struggles are common and to celebrate a significant milestone in my journey. PS, I still plan on pursuing higher education, and working at L'Oréal will provide invaluable experience and insights as I continue my educational journey. Time flies when you’re having fun! I’m celebrating 2 years at Publicis Groupe UK this week, so here are some of my reflections from my time here so far. 1️⃣ You can do it - Let’s be real, starting a new job is scary. All of the self doubt creeps in and you start to think, can I actually do this job? As with most things in life, the internal stress and worry is always 100x worse and the reality more often than not is positive. But for anyone suffering with self doubt, back yourself. You can do it. 2️⃣ The people are what make it - Working in the talent space, I’m lucky to meet hundreds of people on the job hunt, or at early stages in their careers. I’m constantly amazed with their knowledge, passion and curiosity. People are one of my main motivators, so seeing a candidate land a job, seeing our interns make waves in their agencies, and seeing our apprentices grow in confidence gives me enormous pride. All of this though is only possible because of the incredible early careers team of Laura Boyle, Steffi Ballmann, Harvey R. and Bethany Ward that I am so fortunate to be part of. And of course the wider talent team at Publicis Groupe UK all of who I learn so much from every day. 3️⃣ Healthy challenges - I operate at my best just out of my comfort zone. Healthy challenges get the best out of me and learning this over the last two years has really helped me to learn and develop further and faster than ever before. If I’m out of my comfort zone, I’m learning. 4️⃣ Never compromise on what you believe in - My values are my drivers. This means sometimes I need to ask uncomfortable questions, challenge things and stand up for what I think is right. This can be hard but it means at the end of each day and week I can say I’ve given my all to everything. 5️⃣ Refresh and recharge to be able to go again - I used to work at 100% for 100% of the time, and guess what, it burnt me out. Taking regular leave once a quarter has really helped me to be able to keep motivated, and have the energy to keep pushing through each quarter 🙏 Thanks to everyone who I’ve had the pleasure of working with at Publicis Groupe UK in the last two years, and here’s to everything that lies ahead. 💭How would life have been if you hadn’t failed a few interviews? I failed so many - consulting, retail, marketing, auditing, sales, tech etc … even failed the final informal coffee round ☕️ The feedback was that I would get “bored”, I was not the “most skilled” for the role or lacked experience 👀 Of course, it broke my confidence and career ladder opportunities … But, it eventually opened doors for me elsewhere 🚀 Instead of letting it stop me, I used the failure opportunity to ✨ learn about future industry trends ✨ identify skills ✨ consider every interview a practice Eventually, I landed my first role in technology consulting - with an above average starting salary, clients in the retail space, daily tasks around data analytics and free goodies weekly 🎈 It was an excellent way to ✔️ learn new skills, ✔️ use my technology knowledge to drive decisions and ✔️ build my networking acumen Skills which have undoubtedly supported my business efforts today as an entrepreneur, author and global presenter. 📱Because I lost out on my graduate role, I am now building an app to help women understand their potential, have career conversations and build their mentoring circles so that they are not left alone post-rejection but ready for the next step. 🙋♀️Here we come to change the world LMF NETWORK (Like Minded Females) I wouldn’t have known this was a gap that needed a solution hadn’t I fell into the hole. Failure is a stepping stone towards success.
