Our Democracy Day Town Hall with Gen Z is just one day away! “We’ve appeared on WSOU 89.5 FM Youth Quest Radio and All Politics R Local, and our Gen Z panelists have already shown just some of the heat they’re bringing to tomorrow’s panel! Centering the youth voice is integral to the current discourse on the future of the planet. We are living at the intersection of multiple crises: genocide, ecocide, inflation, AI and new technologies, disease and illiteracy that require more than just talk of inclusion and democracy, it will require a serious consideration of a structural transformation. Before we take the mic tomorrow, we wanted to share some of our thoughts and priorities as we near the 50-day mark until the Presidential election, as we did yesterday," says Zoe Van Gelder, a senior reporter with Public Square Amplified and a panelist at tomorrow's town hall. 🔗Come watch Gen Z bring the heat TOMORROW by clicking https://lnkd.in/emzzmJAY! #GenZ #PresidentialDebate #EmancipatoryJournalism #BlackLiberationMedia #GOTV #TrumpHarris2024 #Duopoly #ThirdParties #Uncommitted #DemocracyDay #DemocracyDayCollaborator #DemocracyDay2024 #USDemocracyDay

The world is at a crossroads in our collective story- and we are all storytellers. Are you using your power to build a new narrative? 2024 is the year of elections—a historic number of voters are heading to the polls in at least 64 countries. And yet- disillusionment and disappointment with our political systems is only growing. The recent UK election saw the lowest turnout by a share of the population since universal suffrage. Violence and civil unrest are on the rise, with new anti-government protests erupting in 83 countries during 2023 and civil unrest, including violent riots, doubling in the last decade. Polarised and tribal narratives, fuelled by othering, thrive in all parts of our societies. We urgently need to build a new narrative, one that can enable our diverse democracies to rise to the challenges they face, that can support reconciliation, co-operation and cohesion. Every time we write or reshare a post, we contribute to the collective narrative of our times. We are helping to write the story that will carry us into our future, either more united or more polarised. Stories with the power to bring us together: 👉 Are rooted in the shared positive values of a large and diverse group of constituents, including "unexpected" allies- focused on what we share NOT how we are the same. 👉 Take time to understand the dominant or counternarrative and address genuine concerns. 👉 Avoid labelling people wherever possible and focus on the behaviours that are acceptable within our communities and societies. 👉 Centre the voices of those most affected and link them to systemic solutions. Seeking solutions NOT sympathy. 👉 Gather and share data, including lived experiences, to challenge assumptions in our collective storytelling and biases in our individual experiences. 👉 Offer an affirmative vision of a path forward. 👉 Transform and challenge the worldview of the "storytellers" as deeply as the intended audiences. Are you telling stories we need in our moment of history? #socialchange

Managing Partner @ Global Media Consult | TV Industry Strategist Navigating the intricate world of TV & Media with clear, expert guidance.
Why should we care in TV? Isn’t populism something we thrive on as media? Populism thrives on sensationalism. Sensationalism drives audiences to you, makes them watch your show. Makes headlines. Makes democracy become fragile and frail. We must care indeed! Populism might bring your ratings up on the short term: both as a TV outlet and a politician. In the mid- and long-term it creates a monster that not only eats up decent political behavior and government but most of all undermines democracy. A lack of democracy means a lack of diverse, lively array of media outlets. We as media need this fertile ground of diversity in opinion, freedom of speech and liberty in creating thing to survive. Populism will kill free media. It will kill us. Hence, we must care! #freedomofpress #populism #democracy #television

Several major causes have contributed to the growing polarization of political discourse. Social media plays a significant role in reinforcing extreme viewpoints, resulting in echo chambers in which people only engage with thoughts that support their beliefs. This isolation promotes tribalism by incorporating political connections into one's personal identity, which heightens emotional reactions to opposing viewpoints. The 24/7 news cycle, which is fueled by sensationalism, exacerbates divisiveness by promoting drama over rational discourse. Misinformation spreads quickly online, causing people to function on completely different sets of "facts," making fruitful discourse difficult. Partisan gerrymandering and polarized elections exacerbate the problem by pushing extremist politicians to appeal solely to their base rather than pursuing bipartisan solutions. Cultural and economic issues, along with a loss of trust in democratic institutions, create resentment and drive extreme political movements. Furthermore, the reduction in bipartisanship in government means less collaboration across party lines, resulting in political stagnation and frustration. These forces have combined to create a political climate characterized by division, suspicion, and antagonism, making civil debate and common ground more difficult to achieve.

Explore the political chasm in US politics, where divergent perspectives shape the national discourse and influence policymaking. 🇺🇸🗳️ Charting the political chasm in US politics reveals a landscape deeply divided along ideological lines. With polarization reaching unprecedented levels, perspectives on key issues such as healthcare, immigration, and climate change diverge sharply between political parties and their supporters. This division is fueled by factors including media echo chambers, partisan rhetoric, and societal polarization. As a result, finding common ground and fostering constructive dialogue has become increasingly challenging, exacerbating political gridlock and hindering progress on pressing national issues. Understanding and navigating this political divide is crucial for policymakers, voters, and citizens alike as they seek to address the complex challenges facing the nation. . . . . . . In today's digital world, social media has changed how we get news and talk about important issues. My latest article looks at echo chambers, where people mostly see opinions that match their own, causing more division and spreading false information. It gives a brief explanation of how social media algorithms work, why people prefer certain types of news, and the effects on public health discussions and society.
