Many ghostwriters are happy to have their names publicly associated with books they ghostwrite. Their names may be on the book covers. Their names may show up in the book promo. They may do their own media interviews and talk about their experience with a Big Name who needed a writer. For the services-buying public, where do we draw the line for who is a ghostwriter, who is a collaborator, and who is an editor? How much writing, rewriting, and/or transcribing and editing is done by each "writer" in a so-called ghostwriter situation? Does it matter to the book-buying public? Do they care at all? When ghostwriters go public, are they really ghosting? Those of us who have NDAs or confidentiality clauses in our contracts agree (on both sides) to not disclose our participation or reveal details that may lead to identifying our contributions. Words people are all about getting the words right. I don't think we did a good job with our job titles.

🛳️ Meet the Global Maritime Forum team! ✍️   If you’ve come across our posts here on LinkedIn, read any of our reports, or seen any of our videos, you can bet that Rasmus Nord Jørgensen had a hand in it.   As our head of communications, Rasmus is responsible for ensuring that “all of the cool stuff we do makes its way to the right people so that we have an actual impact out in the world.” Since joining in December 2022, Rasmus has assembled a small team to carry out his vision of taking the Global Maritime Forum’s communications to the next level. It’s a tall order, given it was our existing comms that first attracted him to the role.   “I had been working in the maritime space and knew of GMF’s excellent reputation on policy, comms, and branding. I really wanted to get on board with an organisation that prioritises the ways things are said and look,” he says.   Rasmus’s exposure to the maritime industry began when, just ten days after graduating from secondary school, he boarded the training ship Danmark for a five-month stint. He later took on a job as a deckhand with an internationally-trading coaster but the 6-month contract was not a smashing success. “I loved being at sea but quickly discovered that I wasn’t particularly good at the job. I also experienced bullying, like several others on that ship. It was a hard lesson, but I’ve taken the whole experience with me in my career. I quit that job after two months. Quitting is sometimes the right thing – the only thing - to do.”   He found a better fit in maritime communications. After covering Denmark’s largest publicly traded companies as a journalist at Thomson Reuters, a communications position opened at shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk. Rasmus jumped at the chance to join “an icon in Denmark” and would spend nearly seven years there before becoming communications director at another shipping heavyweight, BIMCO. He would later hold the same position at the trade union Danish Maritime Officers (Lederne - Danmarks største lederorganisation).   While building his comms career, Rasmus took an extended break in his wife’s home country of Portugal to immerse their daughter in the local culture and language. Rasmus spent his time writing a post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that he continues to tinker with to this day. “It’s been rejected by three publishers, but I haven’t given up,” he says. 📚💪   His interest in darker subject matter can also be seen in his long history of playing complex role-playing games. He’s been playing since he was ten years old and still regularly meets up with “the same dudes I’ve been playing with as a teenager.” At one point, he played the same Warhammer storyline for eight straight years. He’s also recently started an all-women’s Dungeons & Dragons game with his wife and some friends. 🎲   With an eight-year-old daughter and a brand-new puppy, Rasmus laments that he doesn’t have quite as much time to explore his “geekdom” as he once did. 🤓

At last week's Effective Communications webinar co-hosted by Canada's Ocean Supercluster and Cove Public Affairs, Nancy and I couldn't help but kick things off with this throwback photo from ~2012. We noted our history working together to help build a brand that was new to the NL market (and that we understood the hard work, all-hands-on-deck and jack/jill-of-all-trades approach that is required). A few other take-aways: ✔ Nancy Andrews and I know how to get someone out of a difficult situation. ✔ Words matter. Messages matter.
