Our Friday kicked off with real PR talk with leaders of the cruise industry, led by our CEO, Andrea Baigorria, and Claudine Pohl, CEO of Lemoneight! 🚢 Some takeaways: 💥 PR is an area that for many years wasn’t being paid attention to in depth as it should. Let me pick your juicy brain 🧠 How would you approach this culturally hot potato: 🔥 🚨 The challenge: You’ve been engaged by a brave and progressive Australian organisation to develop a campaign that navigates the existing ‘Australia Day’ cultural and political war-zone and promotes a way for Australians as a whole to celebrate the Great Southern Land in a manner that is respectful of its people and considerate of its full history. ⏳ The backstory: For years debate has raged about the appropriateness of celebrating our nation and having an annual public holiday ‘Australia Day’ on 26 January. This date has historical significance for colonial settlement in 1788, but also the commencement of Australia’s First Peoples being abused and driven from land they’ve cared after for tens of thousands of years. Celebrating Australia Day on 26 January is now somewhat problematic and has been largely shunned. Australia is having trouble joyously celebrating its existence as a country without causing significant pain to traumatised people within its lands. 🏆 The prize: If done right, a brave and progressive organisation stands to be a true leader by living its values and kick-starting a groundswell to shape a better future for all Australians. That’s a pretty powerful brand legacy. I simply can't stress enough the importance of having a dedicated internal role within your Public Affairs team. Consultancies are creating COO roles, Embassies are recruiting local internal PA people to offer continuity to rotating diplomats and in the corporate world there are centres of excellence and group roles. I want to double down on why these roles are so important. Streamlined Processes: An internal support role ensures that all internal tasks, from drafting position papers to internal reporting, are handled efficiently. This not only saves time but also ensures consistency and accuracy in your external and internal messaging. It also allows you to actually create and follow a process…. Resource Allocation & Public Affairs Team Empowerment: Having a designated internal team role is about strategically allocating your resources. External-facing Public Affairs roles need internal support to ensure that the necessary groundwork is laid behind the scenes. This makes them more efficient as they spend more time externally facing. Coordination & Preparedness: In times of crisis or high-pressure having a well-oiled internal support mechanism is invaluable. Whether it's gathering data for rapid response or coordinating the internal machinery of your organisation, this role ensures that the team can navigate challenges effectively. As I constantly say the issues change but the structure and process stays in place. Consistent Messaging: Consistency is key in Public Affairs – both internally and externally. With an internal support role in place, you can ensure that all internal documents and reporting align with both your organisation's strategy and objectives, and your own internal recognition plan. The internal support role is the backbone of many successful Public Affairs teams. It's not just about what happens on the frontlines; it's about the meticulous groundwork that paves the way for impactful external engagement. This is a specialised role and one that unlocks the potential of a wider Public Affairs team.
