Reading a Tequila Label to Understand its Quality When you look at tequila labels on bottles you’ve purchased, it’s probably to admire its design and artistic style. But there’s so much more information to be had, if you know what you’re looking for. Let’s take a look at the different components of information that make up a tequila label. 1️⃣ Just as Champagne is exclusively from France, Tequila can only be produced in Mexico. It comes from five designated regions, with Jalisco, the heart of Mexico, being the main area for premium tequila like Rooster Rojo 2️⃣ For super-premium tequila, look for '100% de agave' on the label. This means it's made entirely from top-quality blue agave, offering a superior taste. 'Mixto' tequilas, which don't have this label, are mixed with other sugars like cane syrup. 3️⃣ Tequilas vary from unaged to aged. 'Blanco' indicates an unaged, pure tequila with the fresh flavors of agave, root vegetables, delicate floral, and citrus aromas. 'Reposado' tequilas are aged in Bourbon barrels, resulting in a warm golden color and a rich, smooth palate. Red Rooster, a special bird in Mexico featured on the label. It's a national symbol, representing the sun, courage, good luck, heroism, and pride in Mexican culture. This tequila has won 26 top international awards. I am tempted to try this tequila. Are you? Comment with ‘Rooster Rojo’ if you'd like to see a video of me tasting these two tequilas in my next video. VBev #sonalholland #masterofwine #tequila #spirits #alcohol #drinkresponsibly #tequilatips

Its time to don your Sombrero and raise a toast - its 'National Tequila Day'! 😁 As we raise our glasses to this iconic spirit, it's a perfect time to delve into the rich history and fascinating facts surrounding tequila.💡 Originating from the town of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco, this beloved beverage has been crafted for centuries from the blue agave plant. The Aztecs were the first to ferment the sap of the agave plant into a milky, frothy drink known as pulque. It wasn't until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century that the process was refined, leading to the distillation of what we now recognize as tequila. 🌿 🍸 Tequila production is a meticulously regulated process, ensuring the highest quality standards are met. To be labelled as tequila, the spirit must be produced in specific regions of Mexico, including Jalisco and certain parts of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. Furthermore, it must contain at least 51% blue agave; however, the best tequilas are made from 100% blue agave. There are several varieties to savour, from the unaged Blanco to the aged Reposado and Añejo, each offering a unique flavour profile influenced by its time spent maturing in oak barrels. Beyond its cultural significance and strict production standards, tequila is also celebrated for its versatility. It's the star ingredient in classic cocktails like the Margarita and the Tequila Sunrise, yet it can also be sipped neat to appreciate its complex flavours. Interestingly, tequila has been noted for its potential health benefits when consumed in moderation, such as aiding digestion and possibly even helping to fight off colds. 🤧 🍹 So, whether you're enjoying a shot, a cocktail, or a sophisticated sipping experience, take a moment to appreciate the heritage and craftsmanship behind each bottle. Celebrate National Tequila Day with Fun Facts! 🍹🎉 Did you know these interesting tequila facts? Tequila vs. Mezcal: All tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Mezcal can be made from various agave plants and has a smoky flavor, while tequila is made only from blue agave. National Tequila Day Celebrations: Bars and restaurants across the U.S. celebrate with special events, tastings, and discounts on tequila-based drinks. Health Benefits: In moderation, tequila is lower in sugar compared to other liquors and contains agavins, natural sugars that might help with weight loss and digestion. Protected Designation of Origin: Like Champagne, true tequila can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico, mainly Jalisco, under strict regulations. Different Agave Plants: True tequila is made specifically from the blue agave plant. There are many agave types, but only blue agave (Agave tequilana) is used for tequila. Happy Mother’s Day! 🌹 On this very special day, we thank our moms for their unconditional love and dedication. We raise a toast to moms around the world! To celebrate, we are delighted to share a recipe for the “Drink and Be Mary” cocktail by Clover Club’s Julie Reiner that incorporates WOODY CREEK DISTILLERS Mary’s Select Gin. Read Julie’s thoughtful inspiration on why she would love to share this cocktail with her sweet mom. “I wanted to create a cocktail that my mom would love. She is a big fan of Asian flavors, so I wanted to lean into the yuzu notes in the Mary's Select Gin. I also wanted my cocktail to be low ABV as my mom is keeping it a bit lighter these days. The result is a beautifully floral gin cocktail lengthened with sake and a bit of soda. I know she will love it.” Drink and Be Mary 1 oz Woody Creek Mary’s Select Gin 1 oz Ono Sake .5 oz lemon juice .5 oz yuzu juice .5 oz raspberry syrup .5 oz egg white Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Dry shake and then shake with ice. Strain into a Collins glass over ice and top with 1 oz club soda. Garnish with a lemon twist and a raspberry on a pick. Please can I ask for your opinions... I've been thinking of bringing over a Mezcal/Tequila and I'd like your view on agave spirits - Mezcal is the spirit made from the agave plant of which there forty varieties, whilst Tequila is made from blue agave and only in certain states in Mexico, unsurprisingly Tequila being the main region. Tequila has a place in many of our memories in the UK and generally not too positive, which once you to try the good stuff is found to be unfair. Mezcal however is a more recent addition to our drinking vocabulary, untainted by previous experiences. Due to it being the wider term for all agave spirits, in my opinion it has a wider potential flavour range as well. Whilst we are hearing regularly that tequila/mezcal is going to be the next big spirit, I have quandary...if I can pick only one, should I bring over Tequila or Mezcal? Tequila is better known, whilst Mezcal doesn't have the history that can detract from initial opinion before tasting. However if Mezcal is much less known is it too early to focus on? Having started my agave journey a long time ago and spent a long time in Mexico researching this project, which has only built my admiration for it all further, I do not feel I am a fair representation of where we currently are in the UK, therefore I need your help... Which would you bring over, assuming that either will taste great, Mezcal or Tequila? #OpinionsWanted #Tequila #Mezcal

Like Tequila? Love Sotol. As agave aficionados seek a (genuinely) craft alternative to overhyped mezcal labels and meaningless celebrity tequila brands, they’re turning to Sotol. . . Mexico’s mythical desert spirit. And while demand for Tequila has led to market shortages—and even environmentally disastrous agave overcultivation to feed the industrial factories churning out literal tankers of the additive-laden “Big Tequila” brands advertised to Americans en masse—Sotol is a distillate of an ancient and native shrub, Dasylirion wheeleri, more commonly known as desert spoon. It can only be wild harvested. By hand. In the desert. So can you even talk about sustainability in spirits unless you’re drinking Sotol? Once overlooked, the Sotol category is now by all accounts primed for takeoff in the American market. Spirits experts have reached a consensus on the matter—they’re done with Big Tequila, and they’ve all left for the desert in search of Sotol. The first and finest they’ll find: Sotol Hacienda de Chihuahua, the category leader by all metrics. OVERTON & ASSOCIATES, Patrick Minogue, and I are honored to partner with Francisco Prieto and this historic brand to help bring Sotol to a wider American audience than ever. It's time to forget Big Tequila forever. Come find us in the desert. #sotol #tequila #mezcal #agave #spirits #spiritsindustry #sustainability

Hey! Just read this cool article about tequila and mezcal's booming sales – they're up 17.2% to $6 billion in 2022. It's all about this 'premiumization' trend where people are loving high-end spirits, and tequila is leading the charge. Experts like Carla M. Rivera from Southern Glazer's and Mike Novy from 818 Tequila say people are getting savvy about quality spirits and are happy to pay more for the good stuff. This means distilleries are improving their game with better ingredients and packaging. Mezcal is also on the rise, with a growing interest in craft options from regions beyond Oaxaca, like Bosscal Mezcal's wild-grown agave from Durango. Plus, there's a 'quality trickle down' happening – even more affordable tequilas are getting better. The multicultural consumer market in the U.S. is another big factor. Brands need to be authentic and inclusive to resonate with this diverse audience. In the cocktail world, tequila and mezcal are becoming must-haves. Mixologists are getting creative, and the popularity of margaritas is boosting familiarity with these spirits. Looking ahead, experts are super optimistic. Tequila might become the largest spirits category in the U.S., but the cost of agave could influence growth. Social media and celebrity endorsements are also playing a big role in expanding these spirits' appeal. In short, tequila and mezcal aren't just trends – they're changing the spirits market with a focus on quality and authenticity. Pretty exciting stuff! Reference: Jacobsen, J. (2023). The differences between Tequila Blanco, Joven/Silver and Cristalino. Blanco tequila is the tequila that is bottled directly from distillation, therefore it is the youngest and strongest. Silver tequila is a tequila that usually rests for a few days in barrels, which gives it a softer flavor than white but with the same freshness. Finally, cristalino tequila is the softest of these 3 due to its aging in barrels and its filtration through activated carbon, which is why it also makes it complex. Now that you know the difference you can choose your best choice, this does not mean that one is better than the other, but rather that you can have a favorite one for specific occasions. It will depend on your tastes and needs to choose which one is best for you. #Tequila #Spirits #DrinkResponsibly

What is the best way to have tequila? The first mistake when drinking tequila is to shoot it with a lick of salt and a lemon slice. If you want to drink tequila like a Mexican local, it’s always sipped, straight up. To not look like an amateur, here’s the right way to have tequila: 1️⃣ Select the Right Glassware: Opt for a narrow, tulip-shaped glass, such as a Glencairn glass, to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience. 2️⃣Serve at the Right Temperature: Blanco and reposado tequilas are often best served slightly chilled, while añejo tequilas benefit from being served at room temperature. This ensures that the flavours are neither muted nor overpowering. 3️⃣ Take Note of the Aromas: Before sipping, take a moment to swirl the tequila gently in the glass and inhale the aromas. Different types of tequila will offer a spectrum of scents, from the agave’s herbal notes in blanco to the nuanced, oaky aromas in añejo. The second mistake is choosing poor quality tequila. That will just give you a headache and leave an awful burn in your throat. If you learned to hate drinking tequila based on some horror story from your 20s, it’s not your fault. Comment ‘Yes’ if you want to watch part 2 of this video. DRINK RESPONSIBLY. Cheers #sonalholland #masterofwine #tequilashots #alcoholtips #tequila #Mexico #tips
