Can philanthropy and government work together to drive socially responsible tech? We certainly think so. PJMF President Vilas Dhar spoke with Inside Philanthropy about the recently announced ReDDDoT program, a partnership demonstrating the growing commitment to the public interest in tech innovation. According to Dhar, the design and deployment of emerging technologies – including #AI – is most effective when we bring together holders of technological capacity, such as academic institutions, with civil society institutions that work with communities.  As a collaboration between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and philanthropic partners the Ford Foundation, the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Pivotal Ventures, Siegel Family Endowment, and the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, the $16 million ReDDDoT program aims to help create technologies that promote the public’s wellbeing and mitigate potential harms. Rethinking Philanthropy: The Whole Of Society Approach Abandoning savior narratives of philanthropy, to a society of micro-givers. I've been thinking about this post for a while now. Over the past few months, I've had discussions with non-profit organizations that focus on promoting social justice and economic development. I was initially enthusiastic about these conversations, but I ultimately felt conflicted. This has been weighing on me for some time, and I'm curious to explore why something that should be positive can feel so wrong. Despite the incredible technological advancements of our time, it's disheartening to see that poverty and social inequality still persist. While there are many nonprofits, charities, and philanthropic efforts in place, they often fall short of creating real, lasting change. The problem lies in marketized philanthropy, which prioritizes pleasing funders over supporting the communities they're meant to serve. This creates a vicious cycle where organizations become less effective at fulfilling their mandates as they focus more on satisfying their market-oriented funders. In the end, grassroots activists, social workers, and public servants find themselves undermined by a new class of philanthropic investors, project managers, and consultants. Funding community-engaged organizations became difficult as this model became more common. It is time for change.
